Jake has a brain tumor

I found out a month ago that Jake has a brain Tumor. It is so painful knowing that my baby is going to die soon. He's only 7 and I'm not ready to lose him. I think that boxers are the best dogs but I'm afraid to get another one. Boxers have so many health problems and I want a dog that will live longer than this. I can't imagine getting another breed. Do most boxers live longer than this? I know they are supposed to live to be at least 10 but are the health problems in boxers so bad now that they don't live that long anymore?

I am so sorry to hear about Jake. I know your heart is breaking.

But to answer your question about boxers not living as long as they used, I think you have got that backwards. When I got my first boxer all the info I got was 8 yrs was the average age for boxer to live to. That was 12 yrs ago. My girl lived to 10 1/2 yrs and fought allergies the whole time. The lasted info I've come across has them averaging 10-12 yrs. Though, however long the live it is never long enough. I understand what you are feeling and how much it hurts. I fell in love with boxers because I had a boyfriend who had a beautiful fawn boy. Prill lived 8 yrs. He too was diagnosed with brain tumors. It was heartbreaking at the time, however Prill gave me the gift of learning to love this breed and I got to love and be loved by Star, ( at the bridge almost 2yrs now), Thor (9 yrs) and Arabella (3 1/2 yrs).

Unfortunately you can never be sure how long a dog will live. Juno's grandma passed from lymphoma when she was only 6 or 7, but the norm in her lines is 10+. I think their lifespans are improving, it wasn't that long ago when people were saying boxers only lived 8-10 years, and now I typically see 10-12 being quoted. The best thing to do is find a reputable breeder who health tests, and is open and honest about the health history of their dogs. It doesn't guarantee anything, but it at least makes it more likely that you won't be battling any serious health issues.

i'm so sorry to hear about jake. i know exactly how you feel. i'm going through a similar issue with my Tuff right now and he's only 5. it's absolutely devastating. my thoughts are with you.

My thoughts are with you and I agree with what has already been said. Yes, Boxers do have a long list of health problems, but many dogs do. If you love a boxer, get a boxer. We can't be sure of how long any breed of dog will live, so just get what you really want. I do understand what you're saying though...even though Sadie is still a puppy, I often worry about what I'd do if she had cancer and if I'd be willing to go through that again with another boxer....but I love the breed and I can't see myself with another dog.

Our first boxer was given to us because her owners moved to an apt and couldn't take her with them...she had no health issues at all. We now have a boxer that is a rescue from a puppy mill. We've had her now for 5 years and believe her to be about 8 years old. She only goes to vet once a year for checkup and shots; no health issues either. I read about all the health issues they have but we have been lucky in that neither of our boxers have had any health issues. You just have to go for it. You can't tell how long any dog might live. We had a Westie that lived to be 12 and a black lab that lived to be 14. Honestly I've not had a dog die at a young age but it could happen to any of them. We just don't know. Enjoy them while we have them.

I am so sorry to hear about Jake. Unfortuantely you just can't tell what a particular dog's lifetime will be. My boy Monty had only just turned 8 years old and he was full of life and very active and he died very suddenly - was fine in the morning and had died by the afternoon. Diva is now 11 and a half and still going strong, but has slowed down and she has overcome a haemgiosarcoma on her spleen, removal of her spleen, internal bleeding, bloat, mast cell tumours and the list goes on.

Make the most of the time you have left with your boy.
