ivermectin problems

Recently,our boxer 5 month old puppy, Oscar, was diagnosed with demodectic mange and was given ivermectin to help it. He did not have a bad case of it just a spot on top of his head. Well...the mites are gone but my puppy is left with a bad reaction to the ivermectin. I don't know if it was an overdose he was prescribed or if it really is just a bad reaction. It is effecting his nervous system and it is extremely hard for him to walk now. He was basically left paralized for three days, and still can not get himself up from a down position. Of course, he has been back and forth to the vet and I am taking him for a second opinion tomorrow. I am very nervous that there will be long term effects or that he might be paralyzed. The vet said that it could take up to 3-4 weeks for the medicine to be completely out of his system. I guess I am asking if anyone's boxer has ever had a reaction to ivermectin?! Please let me know if you know anything about this. The vet said that there really is nothing to speed up the process but time. We have seen little improvement over the past few days but I am still NOT convinced that this is all we can do is just sit around and wait.
I have to think that there has to be something to get my little puppy back to his spunky self faster!

dont know too much but my lab was on it too..my vet told me that we had to slowly build up his tolerance to it since some dogs have neurological side effects. Luckily Abby did okay. But my vet did not make me think it would be anything long lasting if she did. Please keep us posted. I will be thinking about you.

my vet told me too that the med stays in their system for 30 days (it is the main ingredient in the heartworm meds at a much lower dose so he was telling me to skip giving her heartworm meds until she was off the ivermectin for a month.

Sorry to hear... hope he recovers quickly.
My boxer boy had been on the once per month heartworm pill HeartGard Plus (contains ivermectin). He'd go thorough fevers every now and then... I NEVER thought to link them to the Ivermectin... that is until I was reading a book by Dr. Pitcairn, and it stated that fever was one of many known side affects of ivermectin! I stopped the HeartGard Plus and switched him to Interceptor once per month heartworm pills. So far so good.
I feel bad for giving it to him for so long.
