Do you have a large enough room with tile or laminated flooring that would be comfortable enough for him to stay in for an extended period of time? I know how frustrating (and costly) it can be to have to shampoo the carpet countless times. I don't know what I'd do if Beau couldn't be crate trained. Good Luck!

Extinction

One interesting method I have come across recently - and haven't had a chance to try myself - is extinction.

It won't help with the separation anxiety, but could provide an answer to the counter sitting (much more relaxed than surfing!!).

In essence, you train Capone to get on the counter on command, then you don't give the command. The idea is that without the command, he will not perform the action....

The concept comes from clicker training, which I have just started investigating and have had positive results so far. It's gotta be worth a go.

Good luck!

Oh my............there will be a special place for you in heaven if that's any consolation...lol.
I had to laugh with you also as it reminded me of our first rescue, a german shepard mix that had a kitchen table problem also. I'll never forget pulling in the driveway seeing this big dog thru the window, not just sitting on the table.....but WEARING my kitchen curtains. Just like the Carol Burnett sketch from years ago as she comes down the stairs as Scarlett Ohara with curtains, rod and all as an outfit. Even tho I was initially angry I had to sit in the car a minute to quit laughing before I came in. If the dog could have talked I swear the look in his eyes said, "I have no idea how this happened but I do know I'm sorry and this is just....wrong".
I'm sorry I don't have any advice but I hope to at least make you smile.

Oh geez..that reminds me of that commercial on TV...I cannot remember what the commercial was for though, but there was a nice big dog snoozing on the kitchen table and when he hears the car pull up, he jumps down and gets on his bed which is...under the table! :p I always liked that commercial.
Sounds like Capone likes to sleep up in high places! I bet he would love a treehouse! ;)
