In the summer I pick up daily, in the winter as much as I can before the next snowfall but the yard get a cleanup as soon as the thaw starts. I just use plastic garbage bags and they go in our garbage which is picked up weekly. I also clean up after her on our walks.

I heard about a neat idea from my boss....

I work at my local shelter and the director has a large german shepherd and a small, very manicured yard. He made a "poop box" in the far corner of the yard for his dog using four railroad ties(they are big 4 sided rectangular planks about 4 or 5 feet long). They drove a stake in the middle of it (just while the training was going on) and filled the middle of the box with cedar shavings. They would take their dog out on a very short leash(its just a little loop thing) and slip it over the stake to keep the dog within the box, but so that he could still move around. Then he would give the "go potty" command and praise and reward him after he went potty. Eventually the dog got the idea that he was supposed to eliminate in the "box" so they removed the stake and thus didnt need the leash anymore. The area doesnt smell because the cedar chips counteract the odor, they have no big piles to worry about in their yard and I guess the cedar shavings make cleanup very easy and are inexpensive to replace when they get worn down or yucky. I thought it was a pretty innovative idea.

Doggie Dooley

From petsmart.com:

The Doggie Dooley easily installs into the ground. It works just like a septic system using live organisms in the enzyme digester. Foot operated lid opener makes it easy to drop in pet waste. Occasionally add water and digester powder and unit automatically reduces stools to ground absorbing liquid. Lawn stays waste and odor-free. Environmentally friendly. Choose from the Original Dooley Prism or the Deluxe Dooley Prism which can be expanded to increase its capacity. Both come with 6 month supply of digester powder. The liquid enzymes in the Doggie Dooley are not effective in temperatures below freezing.

oh you lucky homeowners.... kofi's waste is flushed down the toilet after everypassing.... we keep our garbage indoors and it would get pretty yucky waiting for mondays and thurdays as she's still going about 4 times a day....

so i follow her outside on the leash and always have a small paper plate loosely wrapped in toilet paper... when she squats i slide it under and then slide off into the toilet with paper and flush...

its been working pretty good save for the strange looks on my neighbors faces when they see me walking in the house with poops on a platesmashicon

What a busy thread!;)

When they were kibble fed, it was picked up daily -icky, twice daily in the summer, the flies flocked to it and it was a mess waiting to happen.

Now that they are BARFers, I can pick up every couple days as it is not wet or smelly - often kind of ashy by the end of the day. And they go much, much less.

I use the bags newspapers come in! You do have to look before using! Don't want a ripped one. They are so long, you can pick up and knot. Then they go out with garbage!

Happy hunting.

Renting a house

Since Matt & I are renting right now, those cheap super walmart sandwich bags go out the door with us everytime we take Magic out which is like 5x's a day, and we use the Wal-mart plastic bags to hold the little baggies. We have an old fence post outside the house that we put the blue walmart bag on, put the little poop filled baggies in, and then out with the trash once a week.

Not to change the subject, but its kinda funny. I came home from work on a tuesday (garbage goes out tuesday night) and noticed that the FULL wal mart bag of poop was gone. I though wow, matt's on the ball and has the garbage out already. So i asked him about it. He said he didnt touch the garbage yet, so i asked my neighboor if she put the poop bag out for garbage, she said no. So i thought nothing of it. Well wednesday morning, (we live near the post office drop boxes) i noticed a walmart bag next to the mail man collectingmail from the boxes. and it dawned on me, we have little wanna-be gangsters in town, and they had been near the house all week, well needless to say, our next door neighboor noticed them taking the FULL bag of poop, and putting it in the mail boxes. Funny, but gross all the same.
Now we moved the poop bag on the back porch.

Since we're moving at the end of the month, to a bigger place with 3 acres, Im going to buy a Dooley Setup again.

I know I should pick it up, but I don't. I don't really know what to do with it either. I keep hoping Zack will learn to be as neat and private about it as Zoey is. :D

Ewww!!! That might be the grossest thing I've ever heard! :(

compost

i have been told many times that dog doo is NOT good for garden soil/compost. But if you two swear by it, i'm going to try it, cuz my gardens need rejuvination. I have been putting it in a pile at the back of the lot near the woods(not in an area my dogs can get to), dusting it with Lime to make the smell stop completely and to accellerate the decomposing process, then putting my grass clippings on it for about 2 yrs now. The pile stays the same size and there is never a smell from it.
