There was a thread not too long ago about this. I too like to compost most of the poop...makes for great soil in the garden!:D What we don't compost gets thrown in a lined barrel and thrown out weekly with the trash! Feces left to accumilate in a yard must surely smell especially in the summer months, and can cause some serious diseases. It would be different if the dogs were pooping in a bush or something, then I could understand leaving it. In the summer, I clean the area daily...in the winter I clean the area twice a week. It is much easier to clean when it's frozen in the winter! I think it looks too gross to have alot of poop on top of the nice white snow!!

I just did a search for doggy dooleys and found them on www.specialtypetproducts.com. They look really cool, but it says not to use in clay and living in South Carolina, that's all we have is red clay, so I'm not sure if we could use it here or not.

Doggie Dooleys are okay providing there is the right temperature, right amount of water, right amount of doggy poo at a time and proper and correct drainage as well as they only work in a certain temperature range. They work well for some I guess but I chose not to get one because it's just easier to use a bucket with garbage bag or the pooch pick up bags. In the summer it gets picked up twice a day and in the winter it's whenver I can find it/get to it depending on the snow.
Just for those of you who may have close by neighbors and don't pick up the poop, yes it DOES stink in the warm months and neighbors don't appreciate it. I live by someone who doesn't pick up thier poo either. They DON"T pick up the poo and it does smell so please pick it up rather than leave it there to distrub others. The smell comes right in my bedroom window in the summer so please be consdierate it's not pleasant.

We clean up weekly in the winter and every other day in the summer. That's sufficient because they have a very large pen and only use it morning and bedtime. The rest of the day they run and poop in a fenced-in five acre area which we don't generally clean. (Of course they MUCH prefer pooping in a mowed pathway to going off in the tall grass or bushes.) Frankly, I don't know why I don't clean up as they go. When we camp, we pick up every stool and throw it in the garbage. It's WAY easier to pick up each one than pick up five or ten or more poops at one time. I use plastic shopping bags. They're free and roomy. Just make sure they don't have holes in the bottom. I've often wondered why I don't just flush them down the toilet. I suppose I'd still have a mess with the bag so why bother.

At the moment the poop is collected daily and will likely remain so.
We have a dog loo (same as a Dooley I presume) and it all goes in there. Every 3 weeks the loo is flushed with new water and treatment liquid and off we go again.

there is nothing better than those baggies you get from the supermarket.
Nestle has a doggie door and poops in the 2 corners of the yard. We usually
pick it up ever 1-3 days with a shovel, drop it in a double baggie and put it
in our regular trash.... Had to give the Garbage guys a NICE BIG X-mas gift.

This won't work for everyone. There is a strip of woodland beside our dog's yard. I scoop it up and fire it over the fence into the wooded area.
Smell is not a problem. In the summer, the piles quickly decompose. Fungus, and bugs quickly break it down. It takes less than a week for a dropping to look like a pile of brown sawdust.
You may get a slight waft of the odor when it is flung over the fence, but that's it. We used to bag it and put it in the dumpster, but whenever the top was lifted to deposit trash the stench was overpowering, particularly in hot weather.
Over the fence works for us.
