itchy ears

I have a 2 year old female boxer. Last fall she started scratching at her ears. They would be red inside and sometimes she would make sores on and in ears. I took her to the vet and they tested for mites and whatever else that it could possibly be. He decided that it was allergies. He put her on 50mg of Atarax and Allerderm EFA-Caps HP twice a day. It worked but now the itching has started again. I don't know anything about this medication and if there are other things that might work. If anyone could give me some information and ideas I would greatly appreciate it.

It could also possibly be a yeast or fungal infection.
Have your vet also check for that.

He checked for both a yeast and fungal infection. It isn't either one.

Hello, I am sorry to hear about your puppy's problem. My doggie is also having itching problem and just brought him to a new vet.

Buddy had mange and he had a treatment previously, so my family thought it came back. Actually, my puppy was told that he has a yeast & fungal infection. He now takes 2 types of pills, 1 type of ear cleaning liquid, 1 ear dropping for next 2 weeks. He also received a special shampoo and a conditioner and he needs to be washed once in a week. I am sorry that I don't remember the name of medicines since the invoice is at home. He will be back to a vet after 14 days and the appointment is already made.

The part makes me upset is the first vet didn't explain much about his 'ear problem' and just gave us the ear dropping (anti...something). Now we think about it, she was too busy to 'see other patients' and didn't educate us much at all. My family feel much better with the way we had treated yesterday from this new vet.

I would like to suggest to visit a different vet. So in case your vet didn't see a problem could be found from a new vet. Good luck!
