Chance often scratches his chin. Several days ago I noticed that he has little scabs of blood on his chin. Could this be from the cold weather making his skin dry? Should I worry or just keep a close eye on him? I haven't noticed this before but have only had him since the end of June. Should I put something on it? I have panalog cream. Oh' one more quick question...what are "foxtails?? I saw a post from Nanabear and her dog had "foxtails in his nose". Very interesting. Thanks!!

Hey Andie, I would definitely recommend taking your precious pooch to the vet. I know boxers are prone to dry skin, but you might want to have it checked just in case. For now, you might want to try some cortizon to stop the itching. Be sure to keep it clean.

Have you figured out the source of the itching? If you can't find the cause so that you can stop it from happening, maybe a trip to the vet is in order. :)

Well, I have checked his chin and I don't see any fakeyness (sp?) or bumps. I figured just like us, dogs can get itchy.

You know, boxers are always sticking their heads into something they shouldn't...it's a wonder they don't have more problems! I'm sure your baby will be fine. :)

Itchy Chins

My three year old white boxer Katy has a very itchy and has a thick textured skin around her muzzle - she tends to push things along the ground i.e. toys, sticks, stones - which is why I think this started however the vet gave me a tablet which seems to consist mainly of Oil of Evening Primrose Oil - I dont give her the tablets daily just every now and then for a weeks duration when I start to see her scratching. I hope this helps!!

Hi Andie. Foxtails are a variety of "wheat type" weeds that grow after the rains, all summer. A stalk with a head that seperates into many, many little "v" splinters. They are the most dangerous after they dry, fall on the ground and disintegrate into many little pieces where they can get sniffed up a nose. They are barbed, and once "in" - they don't want to come back out and work their way farther in. They also get in eyes, ears, between toes, stuck in the throat. You would not think, from looking at one - it could cause the problems they do!
Maybe Chance has Acne on his chin (he would have bumps). Very common in Boxers, and can be caused by feeding in plastic dishes, which harbor bacteria and keep it going. Try switching to glass or stainless steel dishes.
Mack had Acne on his chin through his adolescence, but he outgrew it.
