I heard talks about a Lymes disease vacc for humans years ago, but it wasn't fully developed or accepted back then and I haven't heard about it since.
I know a lot of people with the disease including a very close friend of mine and my cousin. It can be a very dibilitating disease, It's awful.
So glad that Kimber is doing well.

We do have the kids vac for Lymes, Gus got his with his annual shots in Jan but Zoe isn't due until August, by then 2/3 of tick season will be over, I'll call the vet in the morning to see about getting her vac for Lymes alone. Thanks for the heads up!

I'm so glad Kimber is feeling better! I was once told that my vet gives too many shots but I told him to give my pups whatever he had. Lyme was one of them. My brother's dog had lyme disease and is in bad shape. Seems to be very stiff and in pain. Poor thing. Now I'm glad I had my vet do all the shots. Can't be too careful - especially when going to parks and letting them play in the yard. I also had Corona vaccines for my two boxers and was told that they were unnecessary. I don't know. I just figured I had to trust my vet. Best of luck. Once again, BW is a place to learn so much.

Thanks for the info on the Lyme vaccination. I didn't even know it existed. And you said that Kimber was on Frontline already. That's kind of scary b/c Frontline is supposed to take care of ticks. I guess it doesn't stop them from biting though.

Yes, all my animals are on Frontline all year long....I am not upset because of the frontline "not working" as a few people have said to me, Frontline is a preventative, not a miracle cure or vaccine, and I am not upset with my vet by suggesting to wait to put both babies on the same schedule.

I was very upset not knowing what was wrong with him, and of course thinking the worst case possible. I am overwelmed that it was caught in time, and he can be treated!!! He will always test positive for it on future tests because the enzymes from Lyme Disease remain in the blood.

I just wanted to let everyone know how important it is to vaccinate for Lyme Disease. alot of my friends didnt even know about it either. So I guess if I can tell one more person about Lyme vaccines it will hopefully help one more dog.

I was also worried about this but our vet asked when i brought Brady in for his check up back on 4/3/04 if we were interested in getting the lyme vacs. I just brought him back in on Sat. for the booster which makes it good for 1 year. Hope everything works out with the meds.

So is it possible for the dogs to get Lyme disease and shake the disease off themselves? A few months back, Zeus was stiff in the legs, but never showed that anything hurt him. When I took him to the vet, he said that sometimes they sprain their legs when they slide on slick surfaces or run down stairs or jump off beds and sofas (Zeus is guilty of all of these). So he just gave him some mild pain medication and it went away after a few weeks. I wasn't too worried becuase he would still run after squirrels and cats, so I thought it would be a sprain like the vet said. Anyway, to make a long story short, I will take him back and get him tested for this disease, and of course start the series of shots. Is lyme disease more likely to get people and animals infected in some areas of the country than others or is it the same anywhere?

To my understanding they can not "shake" Lyme disease by themselves, they need treatment, if gone untreated ,it is, and can be life threating. As far as ticks being more in certain regions then others, I have seen more ticks in the "Woods", or wooded areas, as well as in pastures, and wet areas. I live in the middle of the "Woods" (Literally) and have the Lehigh River (large River here in Pa)for a front view off my property. I also work w/ horses, and trail ride thru thick, wooded areas, as well as my dogs running thru the pastures, which are tree lined.
IMO I dont think testing for it, and then vaccinating your baby would be a bad option, if you have not done so before.
