Is Wellness lamb supposed to be dry & smelly?

I purcahsed a large sample bag of Wellness Lamb formula. My boxers are currently eating Innova. When I opened the Wellness it smelled nasty! I can't describe it exactly, but it had an strong odor as compared to the Innova. Also the kibbles looked shriveled up, dry & just looked so unappealing. Again compared to Innova whose kibbles looked fresh & a little oily.

Wellness is rated pretty high so I would like to use it, but I wasn't super impressed with my sample. Is this the way Wellness is supposed to be??? Maybe I just got an old batch?

If anyone can give me their experience, I would really appreciate it!!!!

I also feed my girl the fish formula and it stinks! But my baby loves it. We tried Kibbles and Bits, Science Diet, Beneful and many others, but Welness is the only one that improved her stool. It also doesn't have corn as one of the first ingredients (corn it's harder on the stomach).

I'm currently using the Wellness fish & potato and before that I was using the Wellness lamb. They both have a strong smell. I think the lamb kind has fish meal in it so the smell is similar. The pieces should look like little pyramids but I wouldn't say they look shriveled. They are full and solid looking but I would describe them as dry (though not crumbly) and not oily looking. There should be a date on the bag somewhere--maybe it is just an old bag?
