Hello all,

Thursday we are going to my hometown, where Asia gets to play with all my friends' dogs! One of my friend's has a Shar-pei who has mange, I don't know exactly what kind, but I know it was hereditary. We're already scheduling times for them to run around in the backyard, but should I be worried that he could transmit his mange over to Asia?

Can you tell I don't know much at all about mange? Any input would be appreciated!
Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Go ahead and go to the park, your friend's dog probably has demodex mange and is not contagious from dog to dog. All dogs have mites, but only those with suppressed immune systems develope skin problems. ~ Cathy

I don't think it is transmittal, but I would seriously question why this friend finds it necessary to run their sick dog with other dogs :(

Demodex is not transmittable, and Guinness has had a couple play dates after he was diagnosed...even made it to a canine therapy seminar with the vet's blessing and obedience classes. He has no problems other then losing fur...God knows his energy level has not been touched...he's been running through his first snow like you wouldn't believe!!!! Your puppy should be fine as well as the other.

Buster (the name of her dog), doesn't really get the chance very much to socialize around other dogs so when Asia comes into town, we usually sit in my backyard and let the two dogs run around while we sit outside and watch them while catching up. Actually, I think he has only been around Asia and two other dogs, of which their owners have since moved away, so he has been pretty lonely when it comes to dogs for awhile now - although that really isn't Erica's (my friends name) fault ... where I'm from is a really small town (the nearest big city is about 1-2 hours away)

Buster IS on medication for it - some kind of baths he has to take or something else, I really don't know. He is a spoiled little guy and she is a single girl with plenty of money so he gets all the treatments necessary for maintaining his health. Because Shar-pei's are more likely to develop skin problems because of their folds, she has spent a ton of money, just on his skin.

Oh my gosh! Okay, we are at my parents house! Buster's mange is 110% in control, but his behavior is a totally different story!

My arms are scratched bad from my elbows to my wrists and my clothes are dirty due to Buster not ever being punished! He can do whatever he wants to do and doesn't get disciplined (this dog is spoiled beyond control, this is her first dog)! He even started a fight with my parent's border collie Dodger (although Dodger did egg it on a bitt). He is a horrible biter and a scratcher!

ARrrgghh! Just had to vent! :) He is a cutie though, I'm going to post a picture of him and Asia playing when I get back home!
