Is Chopper too big to play...

There is a female boxer who lives about 6 houses up the road from Chopper. They LOVE to play when she (Bailey) is out. I'm just worried that Chopper is too big to play with her. He is almost 80 lbs (at 8.5 months) and she, I would guess is 40 lbs (at the most) at 2 yrs old. So far when they've played, I've kept Chopper on his leash so I can some-what control the situation if he starts playing too rough. Am I just being too paranoid? I just don't want him to hurt her.

I'd let them go for it :) Henri plays well with dogs that are under 10lb with no problems. They do seem to realise their own strength - and if they don't, the littler dogs soon lets them know about it.

Seeing as the other dog is a bitch, chances are she'll be the one ruling the roost anyway and controlling the play.

My 66 pound, 15-month old boxer boy played recently with a min-pin PUPPY... so teeny!! - and it ended up basically being my Guinness lying in the sand with the min-pin bouncing and jumping all over him (he was so patient, and so gentle). There are also pictures in my gallery of Guinness, at all of 12-13 pounds, playing around and with my sister's two fully-grown boxers (including a 60-pound female and 75-pound male). They just seemed to naturally know how to scale back their interactions not to harm the little one. AND, Guinness regularly plays with a little short-haired terrier... it's SO funny when they are running around, and the terrier runs UNDER Guinness - that tells you something about the size difference! So I'd say a friendly pair that includes a 40-pound dog and an 80-pound dog should be just fine!

One observation - I try never to have situations where one dog is on-leash and one off-leash. That can set them up for problems. Both on-leash or both off, but not one of each. Dogs have two options, basically, if a situation gets tense for whatever reason - flight or fight. If one is leashed, the "flight" option is removed and "fight" is their only recourse. NOT that friendly dogs are likely to fight, but it changes the balance of things, and I think it's always best to set them up for successful meetings even if their temperament makes a fight seem like a very unlikely possibility. Just some food for thought!

Check out my picture gallery if you want some reassurance on big dogs playing with smaller dogs. ;)

We have been letting Guinness play with a Great Dane/ Mastiff mix (Sammy) since he was about 20 pounds. Samy weighs about 200 pounds. We just made sure we kept a close eye on them and were around to break them up if it looked as if it was getting too rough. Sammy usually seems to know his strength though and has never hurt Guinness.

Let them play. They will be fine. My male is 100lbs at 5 yrs old and my female is 50lbs at 1. She handles herself very well around Zeus. Sometimes she over powers him when they play. They will be fine.

I'd definatly let them play. Charlie Paper actually perfers to play with puppies when we go to the dog park. There used to be this white boxer pup, Mugsy, and Charlie Paper would play for hours with him. Charlie Paper would lay down, and the pup would jump all over him and chew all over his face. It was cute. They'll be ok if you let them play.

Chopper is on a leash because when we see her, it's usually on our afternoon walks and they play in the front yard. Bailey has an underground radio fence so she won't get into the street, but I'm afraid if I let Chopper off, he might run into the street. But I will def. keep that in mind if they are ever playing at our house in the back yard.

Thanks for all the reassurance.

Gotcha - we have situations like that too, Guinness is an urban dog and leash walks are the norm for him. It's not always possible to unleash him, for safety's sake.

Let them go for it! Beau is pushing 65lbs. now and he and Bailey (my 11lb. mini dachshund) play constantly. Beau has never hurt Bailey. I think the little ones are very good at letting the big dogs know when enough is enough!
