definately do the switch from pedigree...its really a crappy food. chicken soup is great...lots of people here feed it. Luna eats canned chicken soup in the mornings and loves it. Other great foods are...wellness they have allergy foods that are really simple with one protein and one carb, merrick has a good allergy food...wilderness blend, luna also eats solid gold hunden flacken. do a search for premuim kibble or allergies and they will give you some great idea. good luck in your search for food!!!

Chicken Soup is a great food! Here are the ingredients:

Chicken, turkey, chicken meal, turkey meal, whole grain brown rice, whole grain white rice, oatmeal, potatoes, cracked pearled barley, millet, chicken fat (preserved with mixed tocopherols), duck, salmon, egg product, flaxseed, natural chicken flavor, kelp, carrots, peas, apples, dried skim milk, cranberry powder, rosemary extract, parsley flake, potassium chloride, salt, choline chloride, dried chicory root, vitamin E supplement, iron proteinate, zinc proteinate, copper proteinate, ferrous sulfate, zinc sulfate, copper sulfate, potassium iodide, thiamine mononitrate, manganese proteinate, manganous oxide, ascorbic acid, vitamin A supplement, biotin, calcium pantothenate, manganese sulfate, sodium selenite, pyridoxine hydrochloride (vitamin B6), vitamin B12 supplement, riboflavin, vitamin D supplement, folic acid.

Part of what makes it a great food is that 4 out of 5 of the top ingredients are a named meat source. Grains are almost unavoidable in kibble, but they are not a natural source of food for dogs (who are primarily carnivores), and often times they are common allergens. You want to see grains further down the ingredient list (never the first few ingredients), and you'll want to avoid certain grains like corn, corn gluten or meal, beet pulp or wheat.

With Pedigree for example, here are the top few ingredients:

GROUND YELLOW CORN, MEAT AND BONE MEAL, CORN GLUTEN MEAL, CHICKEN BY-PRODUCT MEAL, ANIMAL FAT

There are only 2 meat sources in the top 5 ingredients, and both are unidentifiable (yikes!). Corn is the top ingredient, which is extremely difficult to digest and is also a common allergen. I don't think the food needs any further analysis than that, actually ;)

Good luck making the switch :)

I recently switched my dogs to CS and they look great. Their coats look great and my white male doesn't have eye boogers anymore. I would say that you have made a very good choice.

How long did it take for the eye boogers to go away? My new pup has them and he was on purina puppy chow

Mine rotate chix soup and i love it for them. It is very well balanced and they love it! However Sasha (my white girl) keeps the red eye stains when she is on it. Its a great food and very healthy!

Got rid of eye boogers in both Sunny and Sherbert and I tryed everything. Chicken Soup seems to be best for them and thier coats look great too.

If you have an allergy problem on your hands, you may want to try a kibble that's a bit more simple than Chicken Soup. CS contains a variety of proteins and other ingredients and sometimes kibble that contains fewer ingrients works better for an allergy-prone dog. Tae is allergic to something, though I'm not sure what. I have had her on California Natural Lamb Meal and Rice for the past 9-10 mos. Ca Nat also makes a chicken meal and rice blend. Both have a short ingredient list and are good quality. Additionally, Lunasmom made reference to the Wellness Simple Solutions allergy formulas. Those are great quality, as well.
