Is ace still bad? Interesting conversation with the Vet.

I did some serious research on this issue about 6 months ago after both of my vets in Memphis said that ACE was completely safe and kept giving it to me as a take home medication for sedation. From what I read... Jill's boxer pretty much summed it up in her post! I personally flushed the ACE down the toilet and told my vets not to use it on my dogs. I guess I should disclose that I almost lost my first boxer puppy to an adverse reaction to a pre-op anesthetic, adminstered prior to his ear crop. (not ACE) He went into full cardiac arrest and suffered some brain damage. It was a minor miracle that he lived and it took him about 4 months to recover fully. It's not just certain drugs you should worry about, ask your vet about his or her procedures when using anesthethics on your dog....do they have the proper equipment to moniter heart rate and oxygen levels? Do they do blood work before even agreeing to do surgery on your dog?

Sorry...I got on a soap box for a minute. But you can't be too careful or ask too many questions.

Where I work we only give ace with a mixture of things (pain cocktail) if the patient is aggressive, or overly hyper. That way we can handle the animal and it gets knocked down quicker without fighting. Usually boxers don't fit into that category.

I wonder if that is why the technician told me that they do use "some ACE" . . . maybe the amount was smaller than normal since Ginny is a boxer.

Some vets think it's okay if they only give small amounts.

But Mum knows best.

We Boxer parents don't like to our furbabies to have any.

Some people have to fight their corner - others have no trouble with their vets at all.

My vet said there is nothing wrong with ace if you use it correctly. He doesn't seem to believe any of this at all and says it's probably just people that have lost their dogs and are trying to blame SOMETHING for it. *shrugs* I nodded and whatnot but in the end, I let him know he was not to use it on my dogs and he didn't.. He has the best intentions and I trust him whole heartedly with my babies but I guess I shouldn't be surprised by his answer since he also thinks Purina ProPlan and SD are some of the best foods and dogs fed these produce the healthiest coats.. Right.

My dogs sure have nice and pretty coats after eating Canidae.. I'd love to compare it to a SD fed dog.

I am still going to ask that they not use ANY. Better safe than sorry, right?

Ask them to write on her file "NO ACE". Bayleigh's file at the vet has NO ACE on the front and inside cover written in bold black letters!

Well, Tulas home and sleeping in my lap like a baby since the surgery and micro chip placement. Shes pretty tough so I imagine she'll be back to herself in a few days but for now its R&R.Thanks to all for the conversation.

Cosmo was neutered yesterday. I asked the doc to not give ace based on what I have read. She agreed to not give it to him but only because I requested. She does not feel there is ant harm to a boxer using Ace but I feel like the rest of you, better safe than sorry.

I had to take Jesse into the vet last Sat. He had a thorn in his paw. I asked the Vet if he was going to use a local anesthesia or was he going to put him out. When I was told he would be sedated I asked that they not use ace. The vet told me their is nothing wrong with ace but because so many people with boxers request they not use it he doesnt use it at all on any boxer.

When I had Balboa neutered, I told my vet not to use ACE and she informed me that they never used it on boxers. Didn't explain why, but all that mattered to me is that it wasn't going to be used on my boxer or anyone else's. I had just started using this vet, but I think that's what sold me on her.

If there's a doubt, why risk it.
