Is a boxer a protective breed?

As I posted in the previous thread my two have proven they would protect me if it is ever needed. Any boxer Ive ever met has had that same bond with their owners, but I realize that that cannot be guaranteed, as some dogs may not have as much of a "guarding" instinct as others. I would stick with something she really wants. She needs to pick her breed and do her own research. All of the mentioned breeds have their pitfalls, and their good traits. All are very good animals, that I have had good experiences with.

I agree with you that you should get the breed she wants. Consider an adult Boxer rescue that has been trained. Although Boxers are not normally an aggressive breed, they will protect you if need be. When strangers knock on my door, Scrappy gets on his hind legs at the front window stretching all of almost 6 feet tall and has scared away quite a few salesmen! (sorry salespeople, we know you are just doing your job) Strangely enough, he never scares away girl scouts selling cookies!! My DH has a saying: you don't have to be completely safe(expensive alarm system, around the clock security etc) just safer than the neighbors house. Boxers can be very intimidating just by their appearance alone, especially when they bark!!

there is a thread here that talks about One of our boxer member's boxer protected her against a serial rapist in her area. the man started to attack her and her boxer came out of the home and chased him off.

then later he and the other one was playing catch with a dead rat, then threw it toward her.

Dakota jumps and gets scared @ any loud noise, But let some one come near his home...he goes off....
Yes playful, protectors of their family's and the best all around dog.

Research how and what boxers have and are being trained for.

My grandmother has a Corgi (little dog) for a companion, but you can bet if someone came to the door that wasn't suppossed to, she'd be a good deterrant, if not downright threat. I agree with previous posters that it likely doesn't matter what breed of dog you have as much as the fact that you have one and there's a good relationship between the dog and the owner. I know personally, my grandmother, or my mom for that matter, would never be comfortable with a large dog like a boxer. Regardless of how well they protected them, it wouldn't work so make sure your mom is the one to pick out the dog.

Maybe you guys could go to a local shelter or rescue together and pick out a dog for her?
