Hi. I have a two year old male,Dugan, that has a terrible irritaion between his pads of only his back paws. He has had this before, but usually only in the Spring and Summer. A while ago the vet told me to spray cortisone spray on them, but that hasn't helped. I cleaned them really well with anti-bacterial last night and sprayed them. It doesn't seem to be bothering him. He's not chewing or licking his feet, but they look so raw and red. I was going to see how they look after a few days and then go back into the vet. My question is has anyone else's dog had this and how did they get rid of it. Thanks for any info you can pass along.

Pamela, I haven't noticed that happening to my boxer. I wonder what could be causing it. You sound like you're doing all the right things. It's very puzzling!

Could Dugan be getting salt from the roads in between his pads? I don't even know if you have snow in your area but we have lots here. Harley gets salt in between his pads everytime I take him out and if I don't clean them well afterwards, he gets really sore and irritated. He also gets sore, red, feet in the summer from allergies. I give him Benadryl in the summer and that seems to clear it up. Hope this is of some help. :)

Bru has this problem too! I know salt isnt the problem since we dont use salt around where he runs. We are planning to take him to the vet for a check-up next week and we will ask then. I'll let you know what we hear:)

Thanks. Please let me know what they say. I don't think it's salt either. We use that special salt for dogs. Thanks to everyone for their replies.

Pamela,
It sounds like an allergic reaction. My Tiger has red paws every time he gets into freshly mown grass, or walks on the floor when I am cleaning, before I get a chance to rinse the floor off.

An home treatment I was told about [by a professional groomer] is to soak the paws in 1/2 strength regular Listerine [mouthwash] for about 5 minutes and then rinse and pat dry. This worked wonders for Ti when he walked in something he shouldn't have.

Good luck,
Kat

Thanks. I'm going to try it tonight. How long did it take before you started to notice a difference??? I just find it funny how it's only on his back paws. Thanks again.

Pamela,
Ti's paws were less itchy from the first treatment. I kept it up each day until he seemed to be ignoring his paws. The stretched it out to every other day [in 1 week clips] and to every 3 days. I am now soaking his paws every 4 days and so far, so good.

Hi all. I finally broke down and called my vet today about Dugan's paws. He said it's just allergies and that I should give him benadryl twice a day along with spraying them with Cortisone spray and continue to put neosporin on them. If they don't seem like they are getting better within the next week to bring him in for an allergy shot. As long as they aren't pussy or oozing there really isn't anything to worry about. He's had this before, just not so severe. Anyway, you've got to love a vet that will call you back right away and try to keep you from spending lots of money in there office. Thanks for all of your replies. I'll let you know if they get better.

Check out my post on Pododermatitis. What you are describing sounds like the condition Haley has.
