Greetings-

The site has been a wealth of info when we determined we were getting Trixie as this is the first Boxer I have owned. She is a 6 month old brindle female and has been great fun. A question for all of those in the know when it comes to Boxers:

The person we got her from is adamant that she is 100% boxer just not papered. She has many of the physical and character traits of Boxers, but her head and muzzle appear larger/longer that the typical boxer. Many passers by are certain she is pit bull or other breed, which I have read is quite common for many Boxer owners. The orignal owner claims there is an English breed of Boxer that has the longer muzzle. Does anyone know if this is valid? Or does anyone have a similar Boxer that has a similar head/muzzle?

She is a wonderful dog and we are thrilled with her so ultimately it does not matter, but I am still curious to know more about the breed. Any comments are appreciated.

Welcome to BW! I'm not sure about the breed differences, but you can google the european boxer and see the difference (there IS one).

Hope you and Trixie have a blast here - this is the best place on the web!

Hi there!! Were in oregon are you at? I have a 5 month old male fawn, and I think his muzzle is a little longer than the typical. It's really hard to tell if your boxer's muzzle is longer than the usual without seeing a picture or something.

I am located in Portland. Unfortunately I do not have a digital shot of her to show. She has the droopy (for lack of better term) lips, but not the wrinkled pug like muzzle. I hope to get one soon enough to post.

No, that is absolutely untrue. I could use another word, but it wouldn't be polite. What you have there is a backyard breeder with a fancy excuse for poor breeding practices that have resulted in dogs far from the breed standard.

Yes, there are plenty of dogs around with longer muzzles than boxers are supposed to have. Almost invariably though, those dogs are either mixed breed, or the result of generations of backyard breeding by people who have never even read the breed standard, let alone had their dogs assessed in the show ring.

Actually, what you'll probably find is a load of propaganda that promotes the so-called "European" boxer as superior to the North American one, and that invents a load of non-existent differences. Most of the people who believe it though, have never actually seen a boxer from Europe ;)

All boxers can be called European - they're a German breed, irrespective of what country they're born in.

This forum is really for introductions only. Not for asking questions - there are specific forums for those topics. If you care to do a search of the forums though, you'll find plenty of previous threads about differences (or lack of them) between North American boxers and European boxers (and British boxers, Australian boxers, South African boxers, Asian boxers... etc)

Originally my main concern was for my kids. If she is a cross breed, I'd like to know about the characteristics of that breed for the safety of my kids. From what I have read in BW, she has all the characteristics of a Boxer, so no longer concerned...just curious.

Thanks for the welcome!
