Intelligence ???..

Hi everyone, just wondering, why isn't the Boxer in the top 10 most intelligent dog list or in the top 10 less int. list?? i dont see them anywhere, i know they ARE int. , mines only 4 1/2 months old and he learnd ALOT of things already!! what do you think???

This is just my opinion, I don't pretend to be an expert on anything. I think people tend to rate some breeds more intelligent because they are more trainable, more obedient and less independent minded. We had two German Shepherds before we got this crazy boxer and I will say that they were easier to train. I have never had a dog that was so eager to learn what you taught them. And as for obedience I have to say that of all the dogs I ever had they were obedient to a fault. If we told one of them to sit and stay I believe he would have stayed if the house caught on fire. But, I don't think they were any more intelligent than my SuzyQ just different. She has been one of the smarter dogs I have had especially when it comes to figuring out things for herself. She has happily learned walking on a lead and minor tricks as well as sit and stay, but sometimes when we make her sit when she would rather play or harass some poor guest she will also sit back and woo woo sass us, looking us right in the eye. Just like a child. Her sassy, independent attitude was one of the reasons I fell in love with her the first day we brought her home. For what it is worth, that is my take on the intelligence question.

I think that a boxers stubborness gives some the idea they are not so bright...but I know for a fact it is stubborness!

Because they think, and fool the evaluator, and then go off and do their own thing!

i think that just because they aren't on a list doesn't mean anything. So, i say leave em off a list and it will be a secret only shared with other boxer people. i tend to agree that they are too busy playing mind games with the evaluators to be considered 'intellegent'.

You all have had me cracking up! I do agree that the Boxer's stubborness and wanting to do their own thing - which I can clearly see shows intelligence - might look like they aren't as intelligent from afar. But I can see Champ thinking things through and I haven't seen many dogs do that.

so true , i can tell spanky to sit 50 times and nothing when the person leaves he does it, i think he does it on purpose to make me look stupid, pretty smart id say

I agree, I think these lists are based upon trainability rather than actual intelligence... I have never met a dog so able to problem solve as my Hurricane. I can almost see the wheels turning in his head when he is trying to figure out a way around something, or how to get his toy unstuck from wherever he has got it stuck. hehehe Its truly amazing how he is able to reason and even use tools (I am not kidding he has used other objects to get what he wants from somewhere he can't reach!) and from what I understand this is a boxer trait. They are incredibly stubborn though, which I can see where that would have them further down on an intelligence "list" Ah well, its a well kept secret among all of us, and I say so much the better!

Somehow people get the misconception that they are dumb. But they are far from dumb, just stubborn.

I know my roommate was surprised and a little bit angry when he knew he was going to have to rebuild his fence gates because "that darn BOXER knows how to open the gate!"
