My job offers VPI pet insurance. I've been looking into it but am wondering if I should go with another insurance carrier .

What I like about VPI is that they offer wellness reimbursement but the coverage is limited when it comes to hereditary conditions. In choosing a plan I would like the option for the company to pay the vet directly and Trupanion offers that. Do you guys have any pet insurance ? And if so what carrier ?

Hi! I have VPI. I had to use it one so far. Knock on wood. When my girl had an eye injury we got reimbursed 50%. Now I guess you really don't know how good a company is until you really use them. I did get the cancer extra. I know they don't accept dogs with pre-existing conditions. I did not realize about the hereditary conditions. I will look into other coverages before our renewal in July though. Maybe others will chime in. I know some people I have seen were not happy with VPI, I guess it all depends on your situation. Trupanion

I use trupanion. They have been excellent for me. Although I pay 96 a month its high but worth it to me. Gauge is only 6 and has had alot of heath issues (over 12,000.00) worth and Trupanion has been there for us all the way. In fact they are faster to issue checks than my own dental insurance
There are different plans with them so it depends what coverage you are looking for.

Pet insurance

I have VPI for both my puppies. I have used it once, I have the major medical. I had to use it when one of them broke their tooth. They paid it all except my deductible, no questions asked. And my premiums only increased by less than a dollar the next year. I was very happy.

If you're going to get insurance for your dog, I recommend PetPlan over VPI (can't speak for TruePanion). I had VPI with my last boxer and while it helped out a lot with his medical issues (and there were many), they had unrealistic payout caps. On an MRI costing $1700, they only reimbursed $800. So unless they've changed that I say do not go with VPI. They also do not cover breed specific issues (like hip dysplasia) and PetPlan does. The Wellness rider honestly doesn't amount to much. I think every 6 months we got $15 back for flea/tick and heartworm. The only thing that paid out ok on the Wellness was his neuter (I think we got half back).. and that's a one time deal of course.

The nice thing about Petplan is there are no surprises (and I've used it twice so far with my girl). You pick your coverage and you get exactly what you expect out of it. The only caps are the annual caps, and again you decide what those are (they're fairly generous).

If TruPanion will pay up front that's pretty awesome. I would look into that as long as they don't have the price caps or breed clauses.

For reference I pay $35/month for Thora's insurance.

Hopefully you'll never have to use your insurance at all though cause what we really want are healthy pups right?

Sorry, let me be more specific... Thora's insurance through PetPlan costs $35/month for a plan that has a $200 deductible with 90% coverage there after. Monthly fees will be more or less depending on how much coverage you want and what you want your deductible to be (which is a great feature imo).

Petplan

We got Petplan for our puppy too. Same plan as above. Have not had to use it yet but have only heard good things about them.
