hiya all, my boy Guinness had bowel biopsies taken for chronic diarrhoea and has been diagnosed with lymphocytic-plasmacytic enterocolitis.
He is going to be started on steriods.
Does anyone have any experience of this type of inflammatory bowel disease? any advice or info would be much appreciated.

I am sure someone will post some valuable advice. Our girl has not been formally diagnosed, but has been treated as such. She is on a special food, can't have hardly any treats, bones or anything raw. She can only have her special food with yogurt, cheese, peanut butter, plain milk bones (very little) and 100% chicken jerky.

Since she has been on this special vet food, she has been healthier, happier, more energetic and has normal solid stools.

It is such a mess to figure out! Darla was diagnosed last month with IBD-So far we have started the prednisone-20 mg a day, she did really well on just a single carb and protein food for a month(natural balance Venison and Brown rice). She gained about 5 lbs. Then last week started not eating again-so now we have doubled her prednisone to 20 mg 2times a day, plus metronidazole 500mg 2x day(antibotic for 14 days). She has the worse case my vet had seen in 20 yrs and that the Auburn University vet school(one of the best in the country-pains me to say that since I am a University of Georgia grad-GO Dawgs!) had ever seen! and changed her food to Royal Canin-limited ingredient diet Potatoe and Whitefish. Which she seems to like. She can not have any treats-no dairy(which is a pain b/c that is how I use to give her her meds. now I just shove them down her throat!), no treats-although the vet said I could make meatballs out of the can food and freeze them for treats-haven't tried that yet! My vet says it is going to take a lot of trial and error to get it right-hopefully we will wean her off the meds. and can do maintainence with just food. But with occassional flareups back to meds.
Hope this helps- to know somebody else feels your pain:)

hi there, im not sure if our pup champ has inflammatory bowel disease, but he is 15 months and has had loose stools since we got him. and recently we had him at the vet because he was trying to do 5 or 6 poos per walk. we were given granuals to firm up his poo, it worked but when they ran out he just went back to the same. are any of these symptoms similar to your guiness??

Liza was diagnosed with eosinophilic (sp?) IBD about 6 months or so ago (I'm not sure how that compares to the type you mentioned). Hers wasn't severe. We switched her to a raw diet and you would never know she has IBD. Many dogs, even those without IBD, do best on a raw diet. It may be something you consider. I would avoid steroids at all costs and take the natural approach. Another thing to try, which has been shown to repair the intestinal mucosa, is glutamine (an amino acid that you can buy as a supplement in your local health food store). Sending you healing vibes ))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

zoeanddodd, Guinness would do 6+ pooh on walks, very loose/watery diarrheoa. He has never thrived, we have had him since 8 weeks and he looks like a skeleton. is your dog normal weight and size? what are the consistancy of his poohs? what food are you feeding him on? IBD is not that common, you good try a change if diet with probiotics too see if that helps.

he gets a glutamine supplement, have tried raw diet for 4 months, but didnt suit him and he still had watery diarrhoea. would love to avoid steriods but nothing else has helped so we are desperate now to control it.

hi mocket1, the symptoms sound similar but he has just in the last couple of months starting to fill out and is of a really good weight although he is quite small for a male boxer in terms of height! we currently feed him dry food and some canned food mixed through, when he was a pup we tryed a white food diet but it didnt really help. hope guiness is ok.

It could also be colitis

Mugsy would go thru periods when he would have diahrea, sometimes severe, or just soft poop for weeks. Sometimes he would lose all appetite for a day or two at a time, and once a week or so throw up yellow bile. He was diagnosed with either IBS or colitis, which is not uncommon in boxers. We eliminated wheat from his diet, went thru several brands of dog food until we found a simple ingredient one (Regal Sensi-bites which is turkey and rice), ensured that his treats were very simple-chicken jerkey for example. Also, the vet gave us tylan powder which you sprinkle a 1/8th of a teaspoon per meal in his food. Great results. He still has an occasional day when he has the loose poop, or wont eat or throws up, but its the exception now and no longer the rule.
