Even if I had a yard, Mason would be an indoor dog. Right now he's in day care once a week, has a dog walker three times a week and I walk the other lunchtime. He hates it if the temperature gets above 65 - he will go from shade to shade on our walks, so I couldn't imagine him outside for any length of time - especially unsupervised!

My worry would be as expressed by others - he would get out of the yard or he would be taken out of the yard. At least if he is indoors, I know he is safe!

BTW - week 2 out of the crate and Mason is still trouble free!

I would NEVER leave any of my dogs outside while I was not there. It's not very safe. There are so many bad things that could happen... Theft, getting loose and running off.
One morning when I let my dogs out to go potty, I let them out ahead of me... I was only going to leave them by themselves for a couple minutes. When I went back out Dominique was running around with a porkchop in her mouth! Someone (we have no idea who) put a bunch of meat in our fenced backyard over night! I was so mad! But very happy that my babies didn't have time to eat much of it. I don't know if it was poison meat or not. And another time something scary happened in the backyard was when I was out with my dogs and went back in for a minute to use the bathroom... I came back out to find Dominique chasing and poking at a snake! I called her away and was able to kill it with a shovel. I am not sure if it was a harmfull snake or not. Dominique, was not hurt Phew!
There ya have it... way to dangerous to leave em out alone!
A crate or a dog proofed room would be much better.
Now I am always keeping a watch on them while on the yard!

We have 2 boxer. We leave them outside in a chain length Kennel while we are at work. the kennel is 6ft high under the carport on cement against the house on one side. They seem real happy to be in there. While we are at home they are loose in the yard they go in there and laydown while they are tired. don't seem to get real hot in there. We put them in the house during winter months in their crates while we are not home. We do have to be careful when we turn them loose in the fenced in yard. are female jumps right over the fence to some woods. what is weird though is we go out side to check on them and we see she is gone. We hollor for her and she jumps right back over. We started putting them in are fencd in front yard and she has stopped jumping over the fence. the front must be more interesting. Good luck in deciding on what to do. Just choose what seems to be the best sistuation for you and your new boy.
