Lol this is Lily is the morning catching some rays

She always shakes when she wakes up and that wakes me up. 6 in the morning is her usual time lol. I love first thing in the morning kidney beans! Her tags jingling makes such a racket that i wake up and let her in to snuggle in bed for another sleep. Though i get no sleep cause she has a whistle in her nose  But she snoozes away!

haha maybe when you have some time on your hands one day you could make a tunnel. Im sure Sugar and Ray would be glad to help! Or they could steal all your stuff to play with :D

Lmao yup that is the look, Lily is really sweet. She reminds me of Sugar even though Sugar is a fawn. I really need to take some new photos of my two. My luck once I get done making a tunnel my monsters (as I like to call them) would probably rip it apart anyway, but I will give it a bash and see what happens.

Thankyou :D She's my pride and joy! Your boxer babies are very cute. Yeah you need more pics to show them off. I cant stop taking them of Lily, she keeps doing new things. She barked for the first time today appicon .

Oh and thats what we do things like making tunnels for them, just for them to rip up again  Gives them seconds of enjoyment while we huff and puff :D

Hi all,

wow what a reaction about a dog house!

I've posted on other boards too the exact same question and without a doubt the reaction has been just as cool and assumption based. This was the only place where someone had something positive to say about it, even if it was off topic.

I understand that the type of people who keep dogs inside all of the time believe that that's where their dog belongs and anywhere else is just plain wrong. I respect their choices totally and would expect to have the same respect in return for my choices.

As everyone knows about the history of dogs and where they came from, you will know that dogs and particularly boxers were first bred in warm, centrally heated houses. No they weren't, were they? dogs have a coat for a reason. Boxers having a thin coat means they can't handle extreme cold, having a short jaw means they can't handle extreme heat. They would manage in our climate in a warm draft free outdoor shed where it is free to get up and move about without needing us to get up in the morning and do it for them. Chances are our dog will get far more attention than those dogs who are crated for a few hours a day while the owner is at work.

Someone asked what sort of a job would a home worker have that would allow me to play with their dog all day. A bit of an unreasonable question I thought, but I would be in a position where I could take a break every 30 mins or so to spend some play time with the dog and interact with it so as it's not stuck at my feet all day waiting for it's master to come alive and play.

I was very discouraged by what some people said here and on other boards about how keeping a boxer outside to sleep at night is such an awful thing. I began wondering if I should get the pup at all. But I had done the research and had talked to many breeders who breed top show dogs and all of them said that keeping a boxer outside to sleep at night is totally acceptable and that in fact, as some of you have pointed out earlier, the dog can thrive on the freedom. So I'm happy enough with my own decision now again. It may be the case that we will allow the dog to sleep indoors eventually. We'll see how she gets on. She'll start in a crate to help toilet train her but slowly we'll train her out of the crate.

Thanks for the support and actually for answering my original query.

And so back to the dogloo. Some have said that it's a bit thin and not insulated enough. Yet the manufacturer states that it is insulated. Good point about the doors though. Definitely something that would be pulled off though I think. However, we have a good sheltered spot in our garden which would suit perfectly. Add in plenty of warm blankets and bedding and she'll be happy I'd say.

Kind Regards,

Alan.

I think it would be fine, I have to work and I have no choice but to leave him outside. I do worry about him running around and getting into things so I do put him in a kennel during the day until I get home. Im sure there are alot of owners who have to do the same, it doesnt mean we care less for our animals but want to protect them from jumping over fences, digging out or just getting into trouble. So I dont judge you, you have to do what you have to do and I am not in your situation. So good luck

Alan, I think its great you are looking past the negatives and going with what suits you and your future dog best. Im glad that you are still thinking of getting a boxer, they really are the best! I fully agree with the 'before dogs had heating and a/c' thing you said. They slept outside and did fine with short coats. Also if and when a dog stays at a boarding kennel most of the places you go to have outside kennels where dogs sleep (ive worked at 3 kennels so i know) that are far less insulated that a dogloo or other bought kennel. This is a huge transaction from being indoors with people 24/7 to being mostly alone with very little human companionship and outside to sleep. Its no wonder i see extremely pampered dogs that lose weight from anxiety and not eating because they are barely outside ever and they dont know how to cope. Some dogs like a bit of freedom and independence.
I say if you live in a place with mild temperatures and you want your dog to be outside at night then go for it :)

Alan, I agree with you and Checkers, I think your boxer will be very happy with your arangements. My two wouldn't mind sleeping at my feet all day if I was working from home, they would just be happy I was there. Having them able to come and go as they please is great for us and for them, I don't think they would change it even if they had a choice.

I did do a google on the dogloo, and though there wasn't too much info from anyone other than retailers or manufactureres, the search did bring up a website for a kennel with what looked like a structural complaint on the dogloo. It came up as Dogloo Doghouse Dilemma on the google results. I have no idea if it has any relevance, I just spotted it and thought you might be interested in looking into it. Good luck in getting your new puppy, what are you going to call her by the way ?

We're going to call her Missy. We went through every name on the list and although some names were nice, none of them meant anything to us. So Missy came up because my wife and I were remembering what my Dad used to call her when he met her first. He could never remember her name, so would just call her Missy. So Missy became the dogs name then when we remembered. I hope then when we get her that we think she suits the name. We could change it at the last minute.

Yes I saw that dogloo dilemma alright. You see all plastics can go hard and end up being brittle and will easily break like a biscuit, but not all plastics will go that way. I mean, not all plastics of the same type will go that way. So I could take a chance. I've read an opinion on epinions that was favourable and I've heard from a lady in England who uses three of them for her dogs and has no problems with it. What we are finding is that the kennel will be very expensive because no one really sells them in Ireland. So importing it will be pricey, not because it's a dear thing to buy, but because it's big the shipping will be dear. If we find a good quality wooden kennel that isn't a 3 walled shack, we'll maybe go for that. No rush anyway, we'll be crating her for a while until she's toilet trained.

Missy is a really sweet name for a girl. I am sure you will find something that suits her as far as a kennel in concerned. Otherwise you can make some do-it-yourself adjustments like Checkers did lol. We have a wooden kennel for our two but it doesn't have huge entrance slap in the middle, it is nicely to one side and sized to let them in and out without to much effort, but small enough not to let the elements in, so it is quite protected. Also the floor is raised so it is not directly in touch with the ground. It keeps them dry and warm along with their bedding, which they pull in and out as and when they like.

You will have to post some photos of Missy when you have her!! Enjoy!

I think that everyone should stay on the topic that got you to this forum.
What is right or wrong about where AlanD keeps his dog is his dissension.
A dogloo would be great to sleep in. Sorry if I offended anyone, but it is his dog. Good luck with your boxer.
