Incorrect Muzzle??

Hi,

I am new to the forum and was browsing. I saw a old post about boxers being a fad dog and some having incorrect muzzles. I searched this, but came up with nothing.

Since I have two boxers and they both have different faces, I would like to know if one of them is "incorrect".

When you say "fad" dog, I assume you are referring to the Boxer being "popular" now in that people want them for a status symbol (whatever satisfaction that brings them....), which means that less scrupulous and more money-grubbing BYBs will be breeding Boxers because they think they can earn a fast buck selling to uneducated buyers who know nothing about proper temperament or conformation. As a result of this uneducated attitude, the Boxer muzzle tends to disappear and become more prognathic and more like the feral dog's snout. The short Boxer nose is pretty much a man-made characteristic and random breeding without concern for conformation will result in longer noses. So, when you check the official Boxer standard, and you find that your dog's nose is longer than the ratio of nose to head, that's probably what is being talked about. Also, incorrect bite, too narrow across the bridge of the nose, no "stop" (the dip right between their eyes) - all these can make the dog's muzzle "incorrect" and are generally the result of random and thoughtless breeding practices.

oh, I didnt realize the snout was getting longer. I guess what I was talking about is a more square muzzle on one of my dogs as opposed to a flatter one with longer jowels on the other. They both still have the short snout.

I have a 10 week old boxer male. His muzzle doesn't look as square and his stop doesn't seem to exist, nor does the downward slant from the nose to where the stop is supposed to be, like my 2.5 year old boxer boy. I was wondering if all that comes with age or if he is not going to have the square look. He comes from two documented boxer parents.

It depends on what the parents look like, as "documents" or "papers" many times don't say much about the actual dog itself. if the parents had good heads, and good heads ran in their lines, than there is a good chance that your pup may just going through an awkward stage, and he will grow out of it (many boxers go through "ugly" stages since their growth spurts come rather erratically)... but, if the parents did not have strong heads, there is also a good chance that your new pup wont have as square a look as your older boy. unless you are planning to show your new puppy, it shouldn't matter too much. good luck! got any pictures to share?! :)

Hello. "Documented" parents I am taking to mean AKC registered? That has nothing to do to with the overall quality and conformation of any dog. The quality comes from the breeding itself as well as the knowledge of the breeder deciding on those two Boxer parents. A puppy should have a noticeable stop from the beginning. I had a litter a few weeks ago. Come and see their 1 day old pics. You will clearly see a noticeable stop on each of their heads. It looks like someone took their thumb and indented between each part of puppy eyes :) For a breeder breeding for a correct Boxer head, you get very happy to see this. I will admit it is easier to feel than see in photos, but look closely. You will also see a couple of deep wrinkles just below the eyes and above the nose. This is where the stop is indented.

Then look at the weekly photos to see the heads develop. The 4 week photos are fabulous to see their wide underjaws. I am thrilled with this breeding that was 3 years in the making.

As Genie said, the Boxer is a man-made breed. And it takes continual observance from Man to continue to produce that square muzzle with correct depth and width as proportioned to the skull. Mother Nature would prefer a longer snippier muzzle and will produce just that when breeders are no vigilant :)
