Incontinence

On May 17th I posted about Buddy’s liver cirrhosis and other age related ailments (https://boxerworld.com/forums/threads/liver-cirrhosis.171523/#post-1419452) which we have now relatively well under control. There’s one problem though which persists: our little boy is incontinent now and the doctor says there’s nothing we can do.

He had a urinary tract infection a year and a half ago and back then he dripped too. Uripan and Antibiotics solved the problem. This time Buddy was given Uripan again but it didn’t help. So we switched to Genurin – which didn’t help either. His urine analysis and culture were clean and there seems to be no problem there. Yet he sprinkles and drips wherever he goes ...

Our vet told us that back in early May he most probably had a TIA in his brain … which could have inflicted some damage on his central nerve system. The other explanation we got was that it’s simply his tender age …

Ever since he wears pampers and it doesn’t seem to bother him. He does his business in the garden, comes to the back door, barks and puts his butt in front of us like “c’mon, wrap me up” – LOL.

But … I can’t help but hope that there’s maybe something we could do. We discussed with the vet the possibility to check his spine and his pelvis; after all it could be that a compressed nerve(s) could be responsible for it. The reply was that 1) he doesn’t show any signs of pain and 2) even if there were such a problem and a surgery could bring some relief – Buddy’s liver doesn’t allow for surgical intervention. So we shouldn't put him through unnecessary tests.

Any hints or tips would be highly appreciated – thanks a lot!!

You could get a second opinion, but I don't think I would put my dog with your dog's heath issues through surgery.

To reduce the cost of diapers I would get the cloth dog diaper and line it with an incontinence pad. Not only cheaper, but a lot less going into the trash.

God tips from Pam ..
The part of your post where he turns his bum to get the diaper on made me laugh !!
How old is he ?

Thanks a lot for the replies :) - much appreciated. It's a bit difficult here in Egypt ... We've seen two more vets (not of much use) as our regular one came back a few weeks ago from Illinois Uni where he updated his knowledge. I'm also in contact with a vet in Switzerland (my home country) and she helped me a lot with a special diet for dogs with liver problems.

We do agree on not putting him through any surgery and unnecessary tests.

I've been reading about incontinence in boxers in the US Boxer Club - fell yesterday by accident on the article - and sent it to our regular vet. Once our weekend is over I hope to hear from him. I wonder if anyone here has any knowledge about the treatment recommended in said article: Phenylpropanolamine which is found in "Propalin" and "Proin"? In general and now given Buddy's liver condition I don't want to feed him chemicals unless it's absolutely necessary. Yet ... on the other hand ... I wouldn't want him to spend the rest of his life in pampers either sadicon - his reputation is at stake ...

Thanks for the tip with the diapers - great idea but I found only after a lot of searching a pet shop some 40 km away which sells dog diapers at an exorbitant price; but only for girls and only disposable ones. For now I cut a baby diaper in two and wrap it with a bandage. I was also experimenting with a bandage and Velcro closure but it's not satisfying. I also tried the baby "culotte" pampers but they don't hold and ... it looks girlish ... poor boy!!

Helen - good that it made you laugh applauseicon - it really looks funny when he comes, makes a U-turn and sticks it in our face!! Smarty that he is he knows how things work now. He's now 11 and a half and we were lucky that he never really had any health issues in all these years. So it takes a bit time to get used to it. Having had a crazy, goofy puppy for 11 years it's a bit hard to adjust of having suddenly an elderly gentleman with health issues. But we manage. We just love him to pieces whichever way loveicon!! Most important for us is the fact that he doesn't seem to be much bothered (if at all) and enjoys whatever he still can.

Thanks again for all the input!!

Proin is often used with spay incontinence. Finely chopped parsley is also sometimes used. Whether it would work with your dogs issues, I don't know. They might be worth a try.
Good luck!
