I would like to thank everyone for the parsley tip. My roomies lab is going to the vet this week to find out the cause of hers. If it isn't a UTI, they are hesitant to put her on meds for the rest of her life like Debbie was with Jaime. If this is the case I am going to tell them about the parsley so if it works with her she won't have to suffer with incontince. Thanks everyone!!!

Parsley allergy?

Has anyone ever heard of a dog being allergic to parsley? We started giving our 2 1/2 year old 2 tblsp of parsley a day about a week and a half ago to help with incontinence. She hasn't been leaking anymore, but this morning after eating she swelled up severely and had an allergic reaction. The vet isn't sure, but said in the winter isn't typically from something they've ingested or been biten by (ie spider). The vet suggested we try stopping the parsley. I'm just wondering if anyone's had a dog that's been allergic to parsley? It seems odd to me since she's been on it for a week and a half. Any input would be appreciated.
Thanks!

Well, it's possible for anyone (human or canine) to be allergic to anything at all. It's not something I've commonly heard of dogs being allergic to (actually, I don't think I've heard of a parsley allergy before) - but that certainly doesn't mean that yours can't be.

If you want to test it and find out for sure - stop giving the parsley for a week or two. Once the allergy symptoms have completely disappeared for about a week, give her it again. If you get the same reaction, then you know she is allergic to parsley ;)

When I went thru allergy testing the doctor said I was allergic to parsley ( they actually tested for it) so I suppose a dog could be too. :)

Proin

My male has incontinence and is taking Proin twice a day. He was at a high dose (100 mg a day) and started having head tremors (only 3, but 3 too many in my opinion). We had a blood panel done on him and he came back in perfect health. The doc said to cut the Proin dose in half, so now he gets 50 mg a day and still does not leak, and NO MORE HEAD TREMORS! So, if Proin is mentioned by your vet, I thought I would give you a little background info on it, at least from my own experience. It works, but be on the look out for signs that it may be affecting other parts of your dog. The tremors started about 9 months after starting the Proin, so I think its a gradual thing. We lowered his dose in October, a week after his last head tremor. BUT, I am going to try the parsley and see if that works. I give my boys yogurt with flaxseed on their food, so Im sure the parsley would add a little kick of flavor. Thanks for the tip!
