I am brand new to the forums so I hope I don't break any rules (I did read them thoroughly!!)

I just had to put my 8 year old girl down due to cervical disk disease. It was a long illness, but she "requested" to go on Friday. So we have our 10 year old male left behind and lonely. We've called ALL the breeders we know thinking they might know of a litter with a misfit (can't afford a puppy so a white one or a "wrong" puppy that a breeder wanted rid of) or perhaps the breeders would know of someone needing to rehome an older show dog or just some one that needed to rehome for any reason other than aggression. They all have their ears open, but nothing right now. Boxer rescue said she didn't have anything appropriate right now (an uncivilized 1 yo male and an aggressive 3 yo female, the rest were I guess to old or ill and we didn't want to have to dig another hole that size for a while).

Then we went to EVERY shelter & Humane Society in the county open to any breed, we just wanted a nice friend for Angus. But alas, nothing.

Then I saw Karen1212's post about possibly needing to rehome her female. But I have no idea how we could chat as that seems a no-no on the board. I asked the Boxer Rescue lady if a "Karen" had turned in a female boxer within the last 2 months and she said no. So now I'm at a loss as to how to find her without breaking rules. I was just thinking that we may be able to help each other. Any suggestions?

I am very sorry for the loss of your girl. That is always hard.

Sometimes it takes time to go through rescue but that really is your best optio nwhen looking for a new family member because they can help find you just the right dog.

As far as contacting each other, the only acceptable way to contact people is to arrange to meet at a local public place. Those arrangement can be posted on the board, such as a park, dog park, or well known location. I can't imagine shelters having no dogs to choose from but perhaps you could also try that route in another week or two. Rescue, in a situation like yours, is really the best option because if things don't work out they can help.

Also, please post your introduction in the introductin forum. That is something required of all Boxerworld members and is something you agreed to when you accepted the rules and terms. That should have been your first post. Thank you.

Again, I am sorry for the loss of your girl but sometimes taking things slowly is the best way to get the right oucome, even though it's hard to wait. Good luck.

Thanks Vela for the reply and the tip on the forum. I will go post my intro now. I was just so interested in trying to meet up with this Karen person that I jumped the gun.

So sorry for your loss, we lost our beloved Sophie in Feb, so know exactly what you mean. I missed her so much and wasn't trying to replace her but missed having a dog also. I looked on petfinders, the paper and also online rescue when one day I decided to go out to one of the shelters just to "look"
unbelievably they had a boxer, pretty pitiful looking. I was curious and kinda interested, having had 2 boxers in the past, I knew I this girl needed to go home. It has now been almost 2 weeks and she has acclimated very well to our family of 4 + 3 cats. Try the shelter- I never adopted before this and after this I will from now on. These dogs are THE best. Good luck! Cindy

Hi Cindy-

I did try the shelters. We went to 7 in one day - public & private. But didn't find anything suitable (we need a young dog/puppy as we have an established male at home). I don't want to just bring home a dog from the pound, find out it has issues and that it's severly injured my 10yo or make Angus' life miserable. He is great with young dogs/pups. And if he grows up here it will be fine, but there is no way I can just waltz a 4 year old in to his yard and expect anything less than chaos.

So that's why. And also why Boxer Rescue didn't pan out either. If we had no dogs then we could go and get whatever took our fancy. But alas, I'm doing it for Angus so have to keep his needs first.

But thanks for the suggestion!

gotcha, and I do understand, we do not have any other dogs and that is a different situation bringing a dog into an established dog's home. Good luck to you and keep us posted, we all feel for what you are going thru-Cindy

Bev,

I am currently reading a book that a couple of behaviorists recommended that i read. It is written by a lady who runs a shelter in the NE somewhere. I am about half way through it, but it may be invaluable to you in helping you find the "right" dog.
"Successful Dog Adoptions" by Sue Sternberg

It is written for people who are adopting a dog from a shelter or rescue group and has loads of information on how to look for a dog, how to select the right dog, what behaviors to steer away from. There is also a chapter on how to select another dog (i.e. you already have one at home) i havent gotten to that chapter, but have found to book to be pretty helpful. I think it was about $16-$17 at Borders Books, the store near me had one on shelf.

Is 2 too old?

I am in the process of searching for my lost boxer and I do many searches on the pet harbor website. They have a 2 year old female boxer currently named Bonnie ID#A039125 at the Irvine shelter. I know that is not exactly in your backyard but it might be worth looking into. Not sure if this helps or not but just seeing her makes me want to go grab her. Hubby says NO! One is plenty for right now. There is also one that is about 18 months in a San Bernardino shelter. I wish you luck!!!!

2 is perfect

I found her on the site. Thank you so much for that!! We only live about 1.25 hours from Irvine so we'll pop up this weekend if she's not taken. Need to meet her first, but I'll give them a call. Thanks again for the heads up!
