Boxer Pal
ok, here goes.
my baby cassius came from a BYB.
Actually, it was my friend who owned the daddy Pancho, and later aquired Brownie, his mom. i don't believe either were given to him with papers, but they were both beautiful boxers.
He was not well informed about proper boxer breeding procedures, but let them mate anyways. brownie got pregnant and had 10 pups. one of them being Cassius, who was kind of small, but his markings were gorgeous and he crawled towards me immediately.
Cassius is now growing into a beautiful, strong pup, and everywhere i go i get the question,"Are you going to show him?".
My questions are:
first, is there any possibility of determining through any sort of test whether or not Cassius is a pure boxer?

second, is there any way of aquiring papers for my dog if i didn't get it from a breeder?

and lastly, is there any way of showing a dog without such credentials?

all the thanks in the world for any help.

Others will be able to give you a better answer I'm sure but.....
I believe you may be able to get a limited registration (or registration number) for obedience and agility purposes.
As for showing in conformation, I don't think you would be able to show a back yard breeder pup in conformation (conformation is for evaluating breed standard with the intent to better the breed).

In any case I would get your baby neutered and if you would like to try obedience or agility contact the AKC (they should be able to assist you in getting a registration number for these events).

Hope I was of some help :)

No, you won't be able to register Cassius or show in conformation but can get an ILP number and compete in all other AKC events. You can check AKC's site to learn more about registration and ILP numbers. :)

BTW ~ Any dog registered with AKC on full registration can be shown in conformation...no matter where the dog comes from.;)

There is no DNA test to see if a dog is purebred. The best accepted "test" we have is having both parents registered with AKC to show they are purebred.

I am assuming you mean AKC Registration papers. And the answer is NO. In order to be eligible for AKC registration, both parents must be registered with AKC on full registrations (versus Limited registrations).

Yes and No. You can show in Agility and Obedience on an ILP Registration. You simply provide AKC with 3 photos of your dog, give them a breed name, and provied proof your dog has been spayed/neutered. You cannot show in Conformation since that is for evaluating breeding stock and AKC does not encourage people to breed dogs from questionable parentage and thusly does not allow them in competion.

I am a member of the American Boxer Club. As such, I do not register my white Boxers. I had a very handsome white boy in my last litter. Moose was neutered and I helped the owner obtain an ILP so she can show him in Obedience. I could not be any prouder of them both :)
