Hello. I have a 1.5 year old female who I think is fairly healthy. Well she's been making these hocking noises like she's choking and I don't know what to do or what it is. I mean she'll do it out of a dead sleep. What could it be? It's strange. She just started it about 3 weeks ago. Please if anyone knows what could be wrong please let me know. Thanks in advance

Has she been where other dogs gather? Dog park, PetSmart, regular park, boarding facility, daycare? If so it's a good possibility it's kennel cough, if not you should probably go to the vet to make sure it isn't heart related or something more serious than KC.

No she hasn't been anywhere but to my inlaws house. My father in law hasn't mentioned anything about his lab coughing or being sick, and he would mention it cause we've mentioned it to him Hurley has been having problems. I'm really scared. Could it be heartworms or would there be other symptoms? She just did it again while I was writing this post. I'm pretty worried.. Could allergies cause the same thing? She does have runny eyes and a little bit of a runny nose

I could be kennel cough. It could also be heart problems or heartworms. I would suggest that you take her to the vet.

If you've had her on a heartworm preventative I'd say it's unlikely (not impossible but unlikely), if you haven't had her on a preventative given thta you live in Oklahoma I'd say it's a good possibility or at least pretty high up there on the list. Yes heartworms cause coughing. My dog has allergies and he does not cough. Sneeze sometimes, runny nose yes, coughing the only time he has coughed was when he had kennel cough.

I'd take her to the vet, especially if you don't do heartworm prevention, just to get a test run and make sure that isn't an issue. If it's kennel cough it's not a big deal, like you getting a cold, but it could be something more so my recommendation would be to go to the vet as soon as they can get her in.

The only experience I've had with this other than KC is when my 4 y/o female boxer fell in the pool and probably aspirated some water. Anything like this happen to your dog? Lulu had to go on antibiotics and was fine after a few days. Your dog may need a chest x-ray.

I'm taking her into the vet tomorrow. I didn't know this but my father and I were talking and we were talking about the dogs and he was telling me that Jake(his 100lb) lab would pull Hurley around the yard by her collar like a rag doll. And he had to go find her collar twice cause he pulled it off. Could he have hurt her throat? She hasn't hacked up all day.. And she was playing outside earlier like normal. Also we have acorns in our backyard like crazy. She seems to like to chew on them. I heard those can cause problems in dogs if they eat them. I need to get out and rake all of em up. Anyway she goes tomorrow to the vet so we'll find out what's up. Keep our fingers crossed! Bow long does it take to get results for a heartworm test?

Here is some info I found on acorns.

"The primary toxins found in the plant material are tannins and phenols. These compounds attack proteins they come in contact with possibly causing ulcers and bleeding of the mouth lining, the esophagus, and the intestines. This may be demonstrated by bloody or dark diarrhea. Additionally, the toxins are converted in the digestive tract where they may enter the blood stream causing hepatic (liver) and renal (kidney) damage and in extreme cases failure.

The symptoms are usually delayed, in some cases a week after ingestion. These signs may include depression, constipation or diarrhea (both accompanied by blood), abdominal pain, rough coat, a period of frequent urination followed by no urination.

The lethal dose for dogs is not known, for cattle it is approximately 6% of the animal's body weight. If you have a 40 pound dog, that's almost 2½ pounds of acorns. However the literature does not state how long a period of time this quantity could be consumed over and still be lethal. As a precaution, keep all areas available to your dog free of acorns and downed oak vegetation

My vet does the heartworm test in their office, takes 5-10 minutes. It's supposed to be a yearly test. I'd get it done and doesn't sound like you have your pup on preventative so I'd highly recommend you get the test done and start the preventative ASAP if the test is negative so you don't have to worry about that. Oklahoma is a huge hot spot for heartworms.

Hi there! I second all of the above (clean up those acorns and get a heartworm test done). I don't want to scare you, but you should also know that heart problems can cause a dog to cough. I'm not suggesting that your girl has heart issues, but it wouldn't hurt to have the vet check her for possible heart conditions. Keep us posted.
