croped ears!

hi, my name is kathryn and i have a white boxer, white jack russell, and a s/p schnauzer. So you can say i am pretty diverse with dogs and have had many in the past, plus a horse. i will let you know that owning a boxer is a very different experience. i just recently got my boxer back, i gave him to a friend of the family because he was a little too rowdy for my son who was 2yrs. old. but he is 4 now and thing are better, little boys love to torment dogs. i luuuuve my boxer, i would have 10 of them if i could. i am not a fan of ear croping my vet told me that there are a lot of risk involved, such as infections, redoing surgery if the ear doesnt devlope, things like that. but if that is the look you want you dog to have then find some one who has had their dogs ear croped and find out what vet they use because diff. vets do diff.things. and it will be a big responsibility on you to keep the ears clean and medicated if needed. none of dogs have croped ears. if you have a white boxer they are proned to have skin irritation easy, just to let you know. hope i have been a little help

Thanks

I spoke w/ my vet and he said it was harmless! I trust my vet he is a very nice and gentle guy and I trust his word, but he would be the only one to do it! I have already set a date w/ the vet to get his ears cilpped which is a week from today! I gotta take KING to the vet today to get more shots, and i'll talk to him a little more about! I really just wanted to see what you guys thought!

I love my boxer i've already got him potty trained, to sit, and to speak! I'm so excited BOXERS are the BEST! When I got him he weighed 8 pounds, a month later he almost doubled his size and weighed 17.1!

Thanks for you input kc'sduke!!

IS there anyone else who could help me?

Hi Dennis

Hi, my name is Kathy and I have a 14 month old brindle baby named Bailey. I got his ears clipped 5 weeks ago and believe you me, i researched it fully before having it done. I spoke to many many people who had boxers with clipped ears and also to other folks with other breeds like schnauzers, dobies, etc. to see who they would recommend. Then I interviewed the vet to make sure that he was someone I could trust. The vet I chose left his ears untaped for 14 days to let the suturing heal before beginning to tape. It does not delay the process and gives the ears a chance to heal. Bailey's ears have been taped for three weeks now, and Sunday I take them down for 48 hours before another visit to the vet. The vet likes to see how the healing is progressing and gives Bailey a chance to rest from the taping. He is doing fine. I would never say that it is harmless, because it is a surgical procedure and in itself traumatic, but it went well for Bailey. It is a constant source of irritation to him to have his ears taped, and he does a fair amount of head shaking, but in general is being an extremely good boy about it. Right now he seems to have accepted it. I really wanted my baby to have the cropped ears that I feel are so "boxerish", but I can't say that I will have another done. After seeing some of the pictures of "Natural" ears, well, all boxers are just plain beautiful no matter what their ears look like. Good luck with your baby! Let us know how it turns out.

14 MONTHS and you just got the earcrop done? thats strange, most vets won't do it past 12wks. anyways.. you must must must make sure you find a artistic/talented "earcrop" vet. like Kathyw said, find a vet who has lots of experience cropping boxers/danes/dobbies/ etc.. you don't want someone who just does a few a year.. a few a month at that! (make sure your vet qualifies.. just because he is nice, doesn't make him a good earcropper.. a bad earcrop can ruin a dog appearance.) As to length, IMO the long show cut is best looking on a boxer, but also takes a lot of aftercare (racking, racking and more re-racking). My roommate who has a pet dog, got a shorter cut (not too much shorter than a show), and it looks fantastic, and it stood up months faster than my 2 did. (infact we're still racking our 6mo. old pup) anyways, shorter or long... the biggest factor is finding the best vet to do it, otherwise, short or long, it will look bad. good luck! can't wait to see pix!

ps. WELCOME to the board! :D lots of GREAT info here.

it's me again

hey dennis, what part of ms. do you live. i live in north ms. i was just wondering if i might know who you vet is. cause i have a friend who is a dog nut like me and she has a really good vet and she lives south of me, if you would be interested in any second openions from other vets, cause like everyone said they need to know what they are doing. my mom use to bread schnauzer's a long time ago and she said that she had one bed experience and she would never do it again. i am not trying to talk you out of doing it, but just mak sure this is what you want to do. good luck with you boxer and i hpoe everything goes well.

I live in south MS also Waynesboro as a matter of fact, and my vet is Dr. Copper! I'm very interested in second opinions! I promise i'm thinking really hard and taking every step slow and easy!!! I thinking of getting them cut short!

SoleilBxrs- Thanks for the imput! I wonder that myself about her dog being 14 months and just getting it done b/c my vet said no earlier and no later than around 12-15 or so weeks old! I'll be sure to ask how long has he been clipping ears!
