I'm insulted, what do you think?

I had a baby shower on the weekend for one of my friends. A close friend asked if she could bring her 4 year old and i said yes but let her know that kahlua would be there as I know she is wary of dogs around her child. So she came over and she was the first one there. Kahlua is only 7 months old and loves loves loves kids. She hasn't had much experience with them as I don't know too many but as soon as she sees them she is right there wagging her tail. So Kahlua came up sniffing the kid and her mother let her sniff her but then started pushing her head away forcefully when she tried to sniff her face. She said I don't want her near her face. That is understandable. So i went to go on and get prepared for the shower and she says "Don't leave me alone here with this dog". I said excuse me? I said your parents have a large german sheppard at home. She says i know her and I don't know your dog. I said well I know her and she wouldn't hurt a fly, she is more afraid of you then you are of her. So after that everytime Kahlua went near her child she yelled loudly "NO". This annoyed me because I don't want Kahlua to think it is bad for her to go near children. The kid kept running away and that made Kahlua want to play more and she chased her, never touching her, just watching her. The mother would stand in front and say no. I was really busy so I didn't do anything but I did notice it. It angers me because she treated my dog like a vicious beast and also because she is teaching her child to be afraid of dogs which it looks like has worked. But meanwhile she let her daughter chase my cats and grab them and pull them and let me tell you, my Thunder would rip off your head before Kahlua did.

I would be totally insulted too. Why do people always assume that Boxers are mean and will eat small children if given the opportunity. I do understand that the mother was concerned about her child, but there are much better ways of handeling the situation.

I have run into this same issue many times- fortunately it has always been with strangers and not my friends.

I commend you for not putting Kahlua away. It was probaly a good experience for her to see/interact with the kid - but too bad that the mother kept yelling no at your puppy.

I would take Kahua to meet other children in a positive environment so that she will continue to like children.

Good luck - you are lucky that Kahlua naturally likes kids.

Well it is just too bad the mother reacted this way. She could have taken the time to turn this into a Very positive experience for her child on greeting Kahlua and becoming accustomed to dogs in a positive way. But instead the mom chose to turn this into a negative situation for both her child and Kahlua.

I think you will just have to adopt my visitors policy. When people say that they are bringing their children over, I refuse to accept it as a pre warning that they want me to crate Kailee. Instead, I remind them that this is Kailee's home. Your child is welcome as are you, but Kailee does live here. Not that it gives Kailee the right to misbehave, but I refuse to let other people dominate what I consider Kailee's space. They can make their choice from there. Some may see it as me being a Bi@#* I say "Oh Well"
Perhaps you could have your friend and child over again when you aren't distracted by hosting a shower and you yourself make it a positive experience for everyone by introducing Kahlua to the child. I think both Kahlua and your friends child will benefit from it.

You have hit on one of my hot buttons!

This is the very thing that gets under my skin. You gave fair advance notice that Kahlua would be there. As Kysha said, I too admire you for not putting Kahlua away. Seems thats what I always end up doing when people come over and start pushing Scarlets face away when she goes over to them. I cant stand myself when I do that (Send Scarlet off to her crate)! I need to get some back bone!

Grrrrr....

I agree with you and the others. What gets me is that your friend was behaving as if you and Kahlua were guests in her home. And don't hesitate the next time about the rules of your home when expecting company. Hope the shower went well anyway... Lisa

My sister tried to pull that kind of crap when she brought her kids over. I told her if she didn't like the dog around her kids then she could take her kids and get out. No more problems.

GRRRRRR

My two are also the most vicious brutes to walk the streets. Or you would think so sometimes on our daily walk home from school with my children every afternoon. We have to wait around the corner from the playground and then on the way back some parents cross the road when they see us coming. Never mind that I have three children of my own but the house is always full of other peoples kids.

I agree with the above posts, it's the kids who need training as well as the dogs and I refuse to remove my dogs when they have never hurt a fly, they adore kids.

Same here! I would of been very mad at this lady. Espeically since you are in YOUR home not hers. You can do what ever you feel like and I am really glad that you did not put her in her crate. I do the same thing that Jean :D does. I remind people that we have animals and that Rocks is still being trained. So we might have an incident of him jumping or whatever. If they get annoyed out come the big guns from me!

Peggy, I hate when people push Rocks face to get him away. All it does is make him they are playing and he goes right back. I tell them to stand up and just ignore him, not to even look at him and he will stop. Once he has backed off then I tell them to say what a good boy he was and maybe give a pat. I can't train Rocky how to behave around company if they don't help me with the training. Them not doing as I have asked only makes it that much harder in training. He knows how to behave around us!

I find this very sad, not only for you and Kalua, but for the little girl as well. She's gonna have a lifetime of fear of dogs if someone (her mother) doesn't help her and they don't stop teaching her to be afraid of dogs.

I think your anger is justified. I have tried to get my sister to cooperate with me and help by behaving a certain way around my dogs to help them control their jumping in excitement. She refuses and just yells "NO" at them. She doesn't want to get it nor does she want to cooperate with me. What can you do? I just don't invite her over much.

You might want to get some articles from here and other places on the internet about children and boxers, and children and dog training, etc., and give them to this woman so that she might see the error of her ways.

Good luck. Sorry you had to experience this. The world is full of ignorant people just itching to show off how little they know.
