A labrabor retriever's (and most of those hunting type) hair is hollow, their feet are webbed and also they don't have a huge chest like a boxer to pull them under.

My baby loves to swim. He is not as boyant as his friends (labs) but he keeps up with them.

Ozzy never liked the water or puddles for that matter. But, my rottie just loves water and mud, if we are out in the field and theres a puddle he's lying in it, so, Ozzy does everything his big brothers does! I have never let Ozzy go in very deep water I like to make sure he can touch bottom just in case.

Chance loves to swim :p We cannot keep him out of the lake at our cottage, he dashes right down to the water and jumps in. He would be in it all day if we allowed him to. I bought him his own life jacket to wear because he swims way out past the middle of the lake and will keep going and going even though he is tired and fatigued. I would always worry about him being so tired he would sink so know he wears his cute little life jacket as added protection. Maddie on the hand has no interest int he water what so ever!!!!

I never had any idea about boxers sinking until I joined BW and someone asked this question!!!! My first boxer Howie was just like Chance when it came to the water, he loved it!!

We had a female we finally bought her own pool for becasue she loved the water so much. She would get in, and splash, she looked kinda loke she was diggint in the warer, then get down like a "play bow", and blown bubbles in the water and drink it. If you had a garden hose out, she was there and in it.

She would not get in the swimming pool with us, though. She would bark at our kids and stand on the opposite side of the pool just wiggling and jumping with excitement AND barking until they would jump in and splash her. If threy didn't do it fast and often enough she would bark at them as if to tell them to hurry up. Splashing her would pacify her some, but she really liked the cannonballs.

Now her son will have very little to do with water. He will lay on the deck next to the pool, but as soon as his mother started the splash-me game, he was outta there.

Some do swim and love it! Diva swims and has done since she was around 6-9 months old and she loves it. She absolutely loves to jump the waves and swimming really wears her out - there are times when I have trouble getting her out of the water! I swear she gets withdrawl symptons if we haven't made it to the beach for a week or more:D I have to say that it did take some time for her to perfect a 'technique' of sorts - it was ugly and heart stopping for awhile! Diva's buddy, Tasha, is a Weimaraner - now these dogs are supposed to swim, but Tasha hates the water.

Monty does not yet swim, but he loves the beach - he can't wait to get down to the waters edge and splash around and piddle in it.

Lucy LOVES the water. She plays in the water hose and we bought her a little swimming pool last summer. She will play and play untill she's completely pooped.
Oliver on the other hand, does not like the water very much. We took him and my mom's Boston Tarrier swimming last summer. Oscar, the BT, looked like a little torpedo swimming through the water. Oliver, well he almost drowned me as soon as he realized that his feet could not touch the bottom anymore. He started to climb up me and wound up pushing me under. I'm sure it looked funnier than it felt.

Add another! From the first time we took Dasia to the dog park we wanted her to learn to swim! So we would show her the water and it took months before she had the courage to go in it...she gradually went in and dives right in! She takes a running start and just belly flops into the water! It is always fun to see peoples expressions especially lab parents or poodle parents! They think its funny that our Dasia swims and better then their furkids :D Now Bianca well she will only go in to get Dasia OUT of the water because she doesnt want to play in it. :p

Thanks for the deep chest lesson Dan...I never thought about them being built funny for swimming. :)

I must say that even though I take care of the 2 bigges prisses this side of the world, I did know a white boxer named Hampton (Hammie) who was addicted to mud. Oh man...ADDICTED. That dog was a mess!! LOL!!

spud loves the river...he won't stay out of it! He's just starting to get the hang of swimming, although he can only seem to manage a few strokes at a time. He's just as happy to paddle and splash about. I just wish he'd show the same enthusiasm for the bath!:)
