FYI...it started with Naomi's nose and eye swelling shut..so swollen her pores were oozing. So I gave her benadryl.(Thought she had been stung) Next morning both dogs were facially swollen and covered in hives. I called the vet who said they may have gotten it from bees or found a spider nest. More benadryl...worsening as the day went on. Took them into the vet for steroid shots. Oral steroids and benadryl. Then a tinkle accident in my bedroom that smelled so foul (like rotting seafood carcass...only worse) we tried EVERYTHING and finally had to cut out 1/2 our bedroom carpet. A projectile dia-poo-poo spray in my office (another big square cut out in the middle of the room)....Needless to say this went on for a week and a half. HIves/swelling/hives/swelling and from all of the steroids, drink drink drink drink...peeeeeeeeeee everywhere! I'm was trying to figure out what in the hell was going on. Searched the yard and house, skin tested them with fabric softener and detergent, washing everything, bought new bedding + no sleep all week due to two itchy twitchy boxers! Thought they were eating the cat food.....FINALLY through the processes of elimination foundicon I figured it out. When I bought their food, here's the kicker...NUTRO lamb and rice (some thing I've fed them for nearly a year) (BTW I had asked the petstore if nutro had changed anything during my search for a cause ) there was a clump of dog food in the bag. All of the pellets had boded together....of course I didn't think anything of it. Manager dork tells me that they did recieve an e-mail from Nutro saying that some of the food had somehow "frozen" which was causing clumps... NOW, I'm not a scientist, but I'm guessing that if you add water to food with little preservatives, then let it sit and fester in a nice dark bag on a shelf somewhere THAT IT WILL FLIPPIN' SPOIL!! IT WAS THE FOOD ALL ALONG!!!! The thing that I thought was the safest!! I have saved a sample of the tainted food and will very soon be contacting Nutro and trying to recover some of my losses!! I already informed the Petcovfrom which I purchased it!!
BE VERY SUSPICIOUS OF DOG FOOD "METEORS" IN A BAG OF DRY FOOD!!!

That is horrible!!! I am so sorry to hear that, but glad that your babies are ok!! Some people are so stupid...nutro should definately compinsate some of your vet bills for that!!!! Hopefully the petco has pulled all the bags from that shipment off the shelves...wish there was a way to let the other people who purchased the food what was happening!!!

one of my fears with luna is that some food that i give her is going to be bad and i won't know it!!! im so paranoid!!!

I feel

that they ARE responsible for the mess we were in. I'm not an " I want something for nothing" kind of person, but geez!! I think they should at least cover the vet bills and cost of the bag of food! I wish I would have thought to take a couple of pictures of them...they really looked like "boxers" with they're eyes swollen. Pictures were the last thing on my mind at that time.

Sounds like the food got wet and started to get moldy. I would definitely call Nutro. They should have had a recall on the product. See what they told the pet store to do. They may have told them to throw the stuff out and the pet shop didn't. Get Nutro's side first so you can see who to send the vet bill to.

Hope your babies get better.

I'm soo sorry! Poor puppies! I hope they get to feeling better soon.

I have unfortuatly done the same thing...kinda. Buster was in clicker training adn I bought this treat (looked like salami) and was cutting a little at a time. I didn't pay enough attention and it had already gone bad...and I was still using it. Talk about feeling BAD!

My mom ended up telling me to check it....

I am so sorry you and your pups had to go thru this. I'm glad everyone one was ok in the end.

Thank you for sharing the symtoms and the cause. I would have never expected it to be the food, either. I would have assumed it was an allergy or they had gotten into something else bad.

Petco vs Nutro

Petco may have been told to pull it, I didn't think about it like that. Now I'm afraid it may be one of those pointing the finger at each other games. Rest assured, however, that one of them is going to accept responsibility.
