One note about phone calls . . . I know that for me personally it is much better if people call me in the evening or on a weekend when I am more likely to be home. It is tough to return so many long distance calls. Also, if you leave a message for someone in rescue, it's helpful if you can say specifically why you are calling. Many times I've had someone call and say, "Yeah, I just visited your web site and I wondered if you have any dogs for adoption?" Argh!

We do try our best to return phone calls. Some people think that calling will get them a leg up, whereas we still need them to visit our web site and submit an application just like everyone else. I remember one call I got from a lady and I kept saying, "You can visit our web site and submit an application" and she kept saying, "But I thought if I CALLED you and told you about me and my family, that would be sufficient." She made it clear that she was quite wealthy and that that should be good for something. You get a lot of interesting phone calls when you volunteer for rescue!

Home visit

I did not consider the home visit an invasion of privacy. I welcomed them like honored guests. Showed them around, answered questions, served cake, cookies and drinks. The dogs all got Frosty Paws. Hey, they are there to match you up with a Boxer. They're deserving of the best treatment you are capable of giving. queenicon kingicon

To end on a happy note...

Just so I can end this thread on a happy note, I thought that I would share with you all that my new boxer boy KAIZER is lying at my feet. We got him one week ago through Boxer Buddies Rescue in New England. Once I took all of your advice, I contacted them and they responded (probably to get me off their backs!just kidding) withing 2 weeks he was brought right to my home. They asked if I would foster him first to make sure he was the one. By that day I knew he was the one - one week later and I am going through the adoption process to make him officially ours. He is 7 but I he still acts like he is three, my last boxer was 6 when we got him and we had 5 wonderful years with him. I am so happy and would go this route again anyday. For any of you starting out in the adoption process, be patient, be honest and you will be rewarded with a dog like Kaizer that fits into your home like he was always here.

That's wonderful! I wish more people would give older dogs like Kaizer a second look!

Congratulations! Welcome home Kaizer!!!

Like Claudia, I'm also really glad to hear that you gave an older guy a chance. It seems that most people who apply to my rescue will only consider "young" dogs, and once they get older than about 3 years, it gets harder. Older than 5 and it's nearly impossible. Thanks for realizing that the "older" ones are young at heart and still have a lot of wonderful years ahead of them.

CONGRATULATIONS on your new family member!!!! I'm so excited for you all!!! Keep coming with the updates!!

I also wanted to update this thread as it started with a pretty big slam to my rescue about us not following up, etc. I'm happy to say that the OP and I have been communicating via e-mail regarding adoption. The ball has been the the OP's court for some time now... Hopefully we'll have an adoption to report sometime in the future....

Congratulations on your new family member!! And all you Boxer rescue people are truly angels, taking in those poor abandoned babies. And you are right to be so protective of them, to make sure they never are dumped or mistreated again.

I was just wondering - the question about the religion - to Muslims, aren't dogs considered unclean? Maybe they were worried about other family members interacting with the dog.

And where did that cretinous TDave guy come from? Who even considers harming a puppy for spite? Incredible.
