Good News for Brandi!

Glad to hear that Brandi is feeling better - what a relief! Let us know how she does with her new food.

We're still battling Colitis with Sasha :( . She's been on Sulfasalazine and Waltham's Selected Protein food for the past several weeks and seemed to be doing much better. Unfortunately, she got ahold of Chopper's food when we weren't looking and "undid" the progress she was making. Had a follow-up appt. on Sunday - continuing with the same course of treatment, but being VERY strict about anything other than the prescribed food. Even gave us her heartworm meds in liquid form (not looking forward to giving her this since it's supposed to taste awful)! I've learned from you all that it sometimes takes awhile to get this under control, so I'm being patient - sure is tough though!

Hi! I had a male several years ago who also was diagnosed with colitis at a very young age. He was about 4 months old when he started showing the same symptoms as Brandi. At first the vet put him on the Hills Science Diet ID food too, but it became too expensive and inconvenient after a while. The only food that worked for Apollo was "California Natural". It's a natural lamb and rice food with no preservatives or additives and very few ingredients. He did really well on it for the rest of his life. I don't know if you can get it where you are. I had to buy it at a large dog food wherehouse since Petco and Petsmart don't carry it, but it was much cheaper than the prescription dog food. Good luck with Brandi. I understand how frustrating this condition can be. Take Care.

Fast-Trak

For short time help with Colitus, I suggest Fast-Trak. Your vet will have it. It is like concentrated yogurt. It puts helpful cultures into your dog's colon to help settle it.

my puppy had colitis from the day we brought her home-she is now one and a half and is okay, but still has boughts with it-we had her on the hills and it did wonders for her, it just got very very very expecive-our vet gave us a homemade meal to make for her -which was time consuming but actually a lot cheaper-now we have weened her on the science diet -sensitive stomach-we mix that in her bowl with chicken and rice that i make once a week-

some things we were told that definitely irritate her and still do-too much rawhide-don't give it to her-any treats-we give our dog the hills light chicken and rice bisquits-large bone-she loves them and since they are light they don't have a lot of fat and she has never had a problem with them. We also never change her diet -now that she is on this we are sticking with it--she still gets boughts of it and when that happens she knows and won't eat that whole day-when she is like that i usually take away the dry food and go back to just the chicken and rice for 2 days to let her heal. If you want that homemade menu please let me know i will be happy to give it to you-it did work-i think as she is getting older and has healed a lot she can handle a little more, but we had problems since day one-i can sympathize.please let me know if you need anything else

yogurt will help

Hey folks,

I wanted to share some information with you. I have an 8yr old brindle female, who ahs had colitis her whole life. We tried the sulfasalazine(spelling?) but that made her vomit and very lethargic. So I spoke to a friend, that also happens to be a vet and he suggested giving her some plain yogurt with an active culture, the yogurt would help to restore the Ph balance in her system. We have been using this to treat her for quite some time now and it has been very successful. Usually when I see some blood on the outside of her stool mixed with mucus, I will give her a table spoon with her evening meal and it clears up within a few days. I hope this helps.

I did not realize yogurt could help with colitis. I will definitely try it if I see blood or mucus in her stools again. Everyone has been such a big help. I am so glad the Internet has allowed information to become available to so many people. Have a wonderful weekend!
