Hello everyone! I enjoy coming in here and reading all the posts. I don't stop in often enough though! I'm wondering if I'm doing something wrong with my puppy Kayla. She is now 5 months old, and still has accidents in the house!!!!! I know the last time I was in here, someone mentioned a bell. Could you please direct me to a thread where I can read up more on it? We still crate her.......but she still goes in there at times. I'm afraid her Cinderella sleeping bag is going to be ruined by washing it so much!! she does love Cinderella so! :D

Thanks

Just to let you know you aren't the only one, my sisters great dane mix is 15 months (adopted at 3 months) and still has at least one accident a day. I don't really have any advice, but just wanted to tell you you aren't alone/\.

thank you......I've been sitting here searching and reading.....and while I was busy trying to find a cure......sweet little Kayla peed in her crate!!!!! :(

oh well.....we'll keep working on it.

will any kind of bell work? I did see some thing in the JC Penny catalog....it was $50 though

Any bell will do, we got one of those small bells from a pet store. Just hang it by the door at a level where your dog can hit it with their paw or their nose.

Have you also had her checked out to rule out infections?

We used the bell to train our youngest, Marley. We were having such a hard time trying to get him to 'tell' us when he had to go potty. We heard about bell training and we hung a bell (I think it was a bell from Christmas - just a decoration I believe) on the back door knob - it took him about a day to learn to ring the bell.

I supposed it helped having an older dog to help him learn he should go outside to go potty - Justin (the older one) was not trained by using the bell - we didn't even use a bell until after we got Marley- Justin was already potty trained when we got him. He still doesn't use the bell as much as Marley, usually he just stands by the back door and looks at us.

Marley, on the other hand, will ring the bell very loudly to get our attention. Many time he rings it just to go outside to play.

Good luck!

Chloe just turned 6 mo. When she hit 5 mo she was still having accidents. It has decreased over the last month. She has a couple last week when DH didn't let her out in the am and left for work and I was asleep. Otherwise she is fine. This week is better.

My breeder told me that some of her boxers were not completely potty trained until they were a little over a year old. My vet also concurred that boxers tend to be a little slower than other dogs in potty training. Our Sammie is 10 months old and still sometimes pees in his crate when left in there all day. He hasn't really had any accidents in the house in a while since we let him out a lot, and also when the weather is not too bad, we leave our back door open so that he can come as go as he pleases into the back yard. A couple times, first thing in the morning when we let him out, he would go pee real quick so he could come in and eat his breakfast. If the door wasn't open for him to go right back out, he would go into some far off room and poop. I don't think he really knows yet how to tell us he needs to go out. So, leaving the door open has worked for us. I only hope that he learns to let us know so we can close the door in the dead of winter. Hopefully when the really cold weather comes along, he will be know better since he will be a little bit older. I really think that as long as they are under a year old, they are really still babies and we need to be patient and accommodating. Good Luck.

Marley is almost 7 months old and hasn't had an accident for months - so long I don't remember the last time. I really think the bell method worked wonders for us.
