We went Christmas shopping to two different malls today and both pet stores had boxer puppies.

The first mall had a female fawn, very flashy. Very pretty dog. She was 3 months old. They wanted $1000 for her.

The second mall had a female fawn, 9 weeks old with a black mask. She was adorable. They wanted $1100 for her.

It took a lot not to bring both of these sweet puppies home. It is probably a good thing that they were so expensive because Megan might have had a playmate tonight.

Yeah, those prices are ridiculous.
We looked at a boxer puppy at the pet store. We knew we wouldnt buy one from a pet store, but it was very hard not to take her. We took her out of the cage and played with her. She was a flashy fawn and was $1200. Ridiculous!!!!

We ended up getting Striker from a breeder for $500! Why would you pay so much for a petstore dog when you can go pick one from a litter of healthy dogs. Crazy.

Holy Cow, those are some jacked up prices!!

They must have pooped gold! Maybe some jackass can use their Discover card to buy that puppy for a Christmas present for their kid.

That would be the perfect mistake, start to finish...

I think that is very sad for these puppies. I'm so glad you resisted! As Strikers mom said, you can get a puppy from a reputable breeder who has health tested the parents for less than half that. And a lovely rescue for a reasonable adoption fee. Buying from a pet store only encourages them to see our wonderful breed as a "marketable commodity". :(

I thought the prices were high too. But they were so cute.

My thought was at a pet store you have the guarantee that if their is a health problem they pay for it for the first year of their lives. Which is more than my breeder will probably do with Megan heart condition.

However, I agree I would probably go through a breeder when we decide to add to the family. This time I am going to ask lots of questions and make sure I get a health guarantee. I also have my heart set on a brindle.

It is very unfortunate that they are in a pet store, unfortunatley some uniexperienced person will end up owning them. But I have to say, I bought Roxanne from a pet store and she has had absolutely no problems yet (knock on wood). I love her so much and wouldn't trade her for anything in the world. I did alot of research before I decided to buy a dog. I only intednded to use the pet store as a looking window to see which breed I liked. When I saw Roxanne I knew right away that I was suppose to buy her. After days of research about the breed I went back to the store and played with her for hours. No one wanted a female brindle..they all wanted fawn so the store discounted her to $600. I would have paid anything for her because like I said..she's my baby. I'm very glad I chose to get her, I think my life would be very different if I had gotten another dog. Our next one though will be from a rescue group. :)

There's a pet store near my house that keeps advertising boxer puppies (other breeds, too). Well, I finally went in---I thought I could act real interested & sweet & maybe find out where they were getting them...& then somehow stop them.

They had 10-12 FIVE week old puppies in the same cage & the place smelled to high heaven. I kept smiling & talking to the sales lady .... & she told me to come in any time.....that they had some "real good" people in Waco that could send them puppies whenever they needed more!!! She wouldn't tell me who they were, tho. It just makes me sick!

I kept thinking of a Lassie (?) story, where she escaped from her cage at the dog catcher's & opened up all the cages & let all the dogs go free....... :(

I paid $450 for Boomer, and he'd had all his shots and had his dewclaws removed and his tail docked. In fact the only shots he needed were at 6 months. I opted not to have his ears cropped, and it was just as well beause I got him at 15 weeks, and his ears were starting to "fold" down in such a way that it would require tons of taping to make his ears stand up straight like they should. I prefer the droppy ears anyway...makes him look less menacing!

Makes me sick to see any puppies for sale in the petstore. Stuck in little cages, teased by people who take them out and play w/ them, and put them back. And more than likely they come from a puppy farm. Those places are scary. Often times these dogs end up at shelters because they were problematic. It's a sad cycle. That is why reputable petstores such as Petsmart don't sell puppies.
