I Never Thought It Would Happen *LONG*

I don't even know where to begin. This incident happened several hours ago and I'm still shaky and basically in shock about the whole thing. Basically, Riley (my sweet boy who LOVES kids) bit one of my young cousins on the face and broke the skin which of course lead to bleeding. I'll do my best to give you the details without rambling on and on...

We had some relatives over for a BBQ this afternoon. My cousin Lynn and her significant other Dave came over with their four kids; Tyler (9), Brianna (8), Alyssa and Paige (5). My grandparents were also there along with one of my aunts (Lynn's mother). My aunt made a trip to the store before coming over and bought a bubble gun for each of the kids. The guns were tied to the box using those thick tie straps that you need a knife or scissors to cut. So, being the "happy helper" that I am, I ran inside to grab a pair of scissors to start cutting. I got the first gun out no problem, but then Riley decided that he wanted a closer look. I was afraid that I was going to cut him so I tried to lead him around me by using his collar. I very rarely use his collar to lead him around, but he never once hesitated or showed any signs of agitation when I've done it in the past. So, I thought nothing of it and proceeded to lead him around to go behind the bench I was sitting on (all of this was done as I was still sitting on the bench). The next thing I know, Riley jumped up, growled, and bit Alyssa (one of the 5 year olds) on the face leaving a cut just above her left eyebrow probably about a half inch.

To be perfectly honest with you, this all happened so fast that I had no clue what had happened. All I knew was that my sweet innocent Riley had turned on a kid something that he had never done before, something that he'd probably never even thought of doing before!! I was just at a loss. I had no idea what to do so I put him in the house alone for a while. After about a half hour went by I went in to check on him. He absolutely refused to make any eye contact with me. It almost looked like he was ashamed of himself for what he had done. Even after I called him a few times he still refused to look in my direction. I felt so helpless and so confused. I was shaking, scared, and I was crying. I honestly felt like I had failed as an owner. After all, a well behaved and well trained dog wouldn't do this right?? I just didn't know what to think. I still don't know what to think.

After I checked on Riley I went back outside and Lynn (Alyssa's mother) said that when I was trying to lead Riley around me, Alyssa had grabbed his collar from the other side. So basically, we were both pulling on opposite directions. Even for such a short period time (I didn't even notice Alyssa grabbing his collar that's how fast it all happened), apparently it was enough for Riley and he reacted. So, I don't know if it was the pulling from both of us in different directions that he was reacting to or maybe he was trying to protect the gun (thinking it was HIS toy) or even protecting me. I just don't know...

Luckily, Lynn is very understanding and just cleaned Alyssa up treating it as an accident. Alyssa was also a very brave girl because by the end of the night, she began to ask for Riley to come out. I kept Riley in the backyard or in the house away from the kids after it happened. Whether or not this is right, I let Riley outside again with us after Alyssa asked for him. I was very nervous about it, but I agreed (after Lynn said it was fine with her) to let him out with us again. Riley was much more gentle and cautious this time around. Alyssa asked to feed him some Cheese Nips so I allowed it. By the time everyone left, both Alyssa and Riley were acting fine with each other. It was as if nothing had ever happened.

I'm sure that this was just an isolated incident, but the fact is that it still happened and it scared the **** out of me. Riley who was once 100% trustworthy with kids now has a "record" that we need to watch out for. It really sucks to say the least.. We already had a vet's appointment set up for Tuesday @ 11am, so I'll definitely be mentioning this to the vet to see if they can check for anything that may be "off" with him. I'll let you know what and if they find anything.

OMG! I am so sorry to hear this! Hugs for you ((((()))))) It must have been a terrible experience. Let us know what the vets says. I am sure it was just a confusion issue. With being pulled in both directions and all.

:( I feel bad for you. My only suggestion is maybe Riley was scared?? I know with it being the 4th of July and all Rocco seems a little uneasy around the house. I'm definitely no behaviorist or anything but maybe he's feeling a little nervous himself dealing with all the firework noises along with other things. I'm sure everything is ok. Keep us posted.

Many, did you hear any growling? or did Riley maybe just turn fast when he felt he was being pulled from the other side and maybe just sort of hit her as he turned and really didn't bit her? I'm sure it had to do with being pulled. Its such a hard thing to deal with its makes you nervous now when he's around kids. Its sort of like something that happens with us when someone grabs you from behind while some else has a hold of you and you turn fast and end up smacking some in the eye, sort of a reflex.

If you were both kinda crouched over him pulling on his collar he might have felt a little boxed in or cornered. That might have scared him and he knows you better than your cousin so perhaps in his mind she was the problem.

I'm sorry this happened Mandy but I am sure that you will work everything out. :)

Are you sure that Alyssa didn't step on his feet? I am sorry about your situation. I truly beleive that my dog is one of the family and I would not hold it against Tyler (my 7 year old) if he hit another kid. I think that the fact that Riley snipped and stopped should be taken into consideration. If Riley had bitten and continued to growl or snip, then be concerned. I would not isolate Riley from kids because that will just confuse him.
Like the others I am no psychiatrist,
Simply my opinion...

Oh Mandy, this is every dog owner's worst dream. I feel as myrocky stated, Riley likely felt cornered. Most dogs and cats will react instinctively with the teeth in such a situation. So many times you simply cannot handle a cat in such a positoin without being bitten. I've been bitten by my cats, neighbor cats and strays when I've "cornerd" them under a deck or bed or chair and try to handle them. And the barrage of fireworks since last Friday evening has kept Pete on edge when he is outside.

I'm so glad to hear that Alyssa is fine and Lynn so understanding. You have two great boys in Riley and Mason and your human family must be pretty cool also.

Give Riley boy a hug from me.

So sorry this happened. One thing I don't agree with is that you can trust a dog 100% around kids. I've seen great tempered dogs that behaved extremely well around kids for 10 years and then one day turn for whatever reason. I have two dogs and they both do well with kids, but I would never trust them 100%, after all as much as they are our babies they are still animals. Just my opinion. Hope everything works out well.

Yes Colleen, there was growl as he jumped up. I'm pretty certain that it was a bite and not just an accidental nip.

No, like I said it all happened so fast. In the matter of seconds. I didn't even know what caused it until I spoke with Lynn about it. I suppose that maybe Alyssa did step on one of his paws, but I just don't know for sure. As far as isolating him from kids, I wouldn't do that. By the end of the day once everyone had settled down and felt comfortable again, I allowed Riley to come back out. When we have another kid over, he'll be allowed to come out to interact also. Alyssa was just so worked up by the whole thing (which is completely understandable) so keeping Riley outside for the time being wasn't an option. Luckily, Alyssa was able to "forgive" Riley by the end of the day.

When I said that I could trust him 100%, I meant that he had never done one thing to make me question him. Don't think that I didn't realize that he's a dog and let him interact unsupervised with a child. I would never do that. I personally feel that any animal to child interaction should be supervised by an adult.

The part about seeing a 10 year old well behaved dog with kids suddenly turn, well that me suggests that the dog is getting old and doesn't have the same patients or will to interact with kids. My mini poodle (who has since passed) was awesome with kids his whole life. His last two years he was a grouchy old man who wanted nothing to do with them. I think this just comes with the aging process. Trust me, this is something that I know to look out for when my boys get older.

Thanks for all your comforting words. I'm feeling a bit better about this, but I still just can't believe it happened. As I said in the title, I never thought something like this would happen. I'm on vacation this week so I'll be spending a lot of time with the boys. A lot of walks and some fun reinforcement training. :)

All the best to you and your family. I know how it feels when something like this happens, one of our dogs is choosy in what dogs she calls her friends and that can be stressful too! Enjoy your vacation.
