This is a subject I feel the need to vent about,& it breaks my heart every time I see an ad or post anywhere on not being able to care or train a new puppy they have bought. People, please do your homework before buying a pup, its a big responsibility, like having children & you should not jump into buying a pup, you need to know you are ready. These puppies don't come with guarantees on knowing how to act or even knowing what you expect from them, you have to be willing to take the time to train & raise this pup, just as you would a baby. This is something you need think long & hard about, before you go out & buy a puppy just because its so cute. Please think twice, we have far too many dogs in shelters & rescues right now that may never find a home, & end up being destroyed over our ignorance, they don't deserve this treatment, but thats what they end up getting! When you do get ready, please give the homeless dogs a chance & consider them before buying a pup, & turning your back on them. Please be responsible for your actions & don't make them pay the price! Now I'll step down off my soap box. Thanks for listening, Hanley

I hope people actually see this and take the advice, though.

Me too. But I wish even more that people wouldn't become backyard breeders in the first place. Funnily enough, I can understand the people who think they're going to make a little money out of it - even though that means the costs of a poorly bred, sickly dog are going to be passed on to the unfortunate new owners. But what I don't understand are those who want to have "just one litter", to "give her the chance to experience motherhood", to "continue his line" or any one of the other myriad of sad reasons for breeding untested dogs that contribute to the shelter populations and declining health of the breed.

I wish people would realise that anyone who wishes can become a breeder - it isn't some sort of elitist club. But like anything else, there's a right way, a wrong way, and a downright irresponsible way of going about it. http://www.boxerworld.com/rescue/top6/

I am with you 100 percent puppy are cute but in my book ther is nothing like giving a rescue dog a second chance the love they give you is 10 time more than a puppy could ever give. My Ally was just droped of in the street of my home town proably because she could no longer have puppys. She is now the most loving dog in the world now that she is safe and sound. I am always saying give a rescue a chance.

backyard breeders

I have had this experience with backyard breeders my husband and I went to see the breeder and instantly fell in love with Rex and we took him home thinking all was ok with him
Finding out he was a very sick puppy and after several tests and only weighed 9lbs at 8 weeks we made it through a very tough time he is now healthy and happy
Had no idea about these so called backyard breeders we learned a lesson but also ended up with a good dog, I agree there is too much of this going on out there and this should not be

I think people should be more careful also, but at least these particular people are asking for help instead of dumping the dog on the street or in a shelter. A lot of people have had dogs before, but not puppies and are not aware of the time commitment a puppy will take.

I hear ya!!, we did get 2 pups, but we also just adopted a 7 year old Golden Retrever(Pooh) a super sweet heart. She was just left at a kennal, we where told it was dropped of by a family where the child was at the age where she just did not want it anymore, people should know what they are getting into when they get a dog.

rrrrrr!!

thanks for letting me vent

... and don't forget about the neglected dogs either.

I see dogs tied up and left outside on a permanent basis. No attention, playtime or interaction for days at a time. They aren't breaking any laws in Ontario and the owners just laugh at my protests and say "their just dogs".

Great eh?

Responsibility

I agree that people should think before they adopt a puppy. I did research this particular breed before I bought. I took her to the vet faithfully, had all her shots, had her spade, microchipped. I loved her to distraction, but I also realized my limitations. I go to school until late into the evenings. Her personality is one that she doesn't like to be left alone, even for a few minutes, much less several hours. I love her enough to realize that I can't care for her the way I wish to. If any of you think this is easy, think again. I am not an irresponsible person. If I were, I would take her to the pound and not care what happened. But, because I love her so much, I want to make sure that I can find the kind, loving and caring home she needs. Someplace where she can run, and where she will have someone with her more than I can be. I will miss her and think about her for the rest of my life, but at least I will have the satisfaction of knowing that I loved her for the first nine months of here life, and I loved her for the rest of her life enough to give her a good home. Until you have walked in my shoes, you shouldn't make rash statements. Thanks.

I also think people should do their homework before they get a dog (or any other pet for that matter). I grew up with dogs, and have always had them in the house, so when I went looking to adopt last May I knew the responsiblity I was getting into. And once I decided I wanted a boxer, I read up on them, and talked to people who owned them. As badly as I wanted one, I wouldn't have adppoted Charlie if the boxer breed hadn't been able to fit into my lifestyle. I'm glad it did though, because I wouldn't trade Charlie Paper for anything.
