I have a 1 year old boxer. She has ulcerative colitis. She has had constant diarrhea for about 5 months. Just in the last couple of nights, she has had two VERY messy accidents on the floor. My husband says that he thinks that we should take her back to the pet store( to get our money back) because it is obvious that she is getting worse. I said " ABSOLUTELY NOT". He can kiss my butt if he thinks that we are giving her up like that. She is MY baby. And that is not fair to do that because there is not telling what the pet store would do with her. I am so mad at him. WE ARE keeping her. That is final. He says that he loves her, but it doesn't sound like it to me.

Why don't you search on here for info on the BARF diet and holistic vets. Maybe you could find one in your area and go for a consultation. Perhaps your baby might be helped by a more natural food and some natural/herbal treatments. And I understand completely how you love her so much. Absolutely do not take her "back to the pet store." smashicon

RE:

I have spoken to a holistic vet. She recommended that I try a natural dog food. I purchased California Natural. She has been on that for about a month now and with supplements of Probiotic powder. There has not been any change yet. I am also mixing cottage cheese with her kibble.

Maybe you could ask her what else you could feed to help increase the level of "good" bacteria in her gut. Switching to a completely natural diet (not kibble) where you control exactly what she eats could help get her back on track. But I'm no expert. It seems this has to be dietary related, somehow.

A reply to my first RE:. I have been giving her acidofillus pills for a month now. I feel by now, that should have increased her good bacteria.

swttcat1 - maybe you should discuss home cooking with your Holisitc vet. Although Kasey doesn't have UC, she does have IBD. We have been able to control this for the last 6 - 7 months by way of home cooking. We used metronidazole as a short term solution in the beginning, but more importantly what helped was working with our holistic vet regarding natural nutrition and homeopathic remedies. We are currently trying her again on kibble, but I think its only because her whole digestive track has had the time to mend, her whole system has had time to heal and develope that we are not seeing any problems with the switch back.

When we first started seeing our holistic vet, Kasey was eating California Natural and had been for about 8 weeks, we to did not see any improvement, actually we saw then same thing as you, very messy accidents in the house. Shortyly after home cooking we saw less urgency to go, less blood, less messy stools, started to see formation, weight gain, and her energy levels increased. This is just our experience but I can tell you that the time and effort was worth it. I can't imagine what Kasey would be like if we didn't at least give it a try.

Best wishes.

In response to your reply regarding acidophilious pills, we went that route too....didn't help. What you really need is some deep healing remedies from the holistic vet, your boxer baby is sick.

Thanks for the suggestions. The only holistic vet in my area mostly practices acupuncture. She doesn't do much homeopathic practice. I didn't any results with the acidofillus pills either.

Poor lil' girl :(

I hope you can find something that eases her symptoms, for her sake and yours! Sounds like hubby's frustrated......
He can kiss my butt if he thinks that we are giving her up like that. She is MY baby.
...... but that sentence should sort him out ;)

Good luck, you'll be in my thoughts.

You could try giving her undiluted raspberry cordial every day. I work with horses & this seems to work for horses with the same problem. There is something in it that seems to fix them up! Don't know what though.

You start by giving it to them twice a day, then once there is some improvement, cut it down to once a day, then every second day, etc. Try starting with probably 5 - 10 mls or so.

I don't know how it would work on dogs, but it could be worth a try, & it won't hurt her. Good luck.;)
