I use cheese to train my pup Drake. Table scraps aren't recommended, but I use littlle peices of steak or non-processed meats sometimes. You don't want an upset stomach though, so keep training sessions very short and very focused. Also I have found this technique to work wonders:
-only say the command once-then physically make the dog do the command (not hard of course), like if you say shake and the dog doesn't shake the first time, then grab its' hand, move it up and down and say "shake, see Drake this is shake,we like to shake don't we?"or something goofy like that to keep them interested.
You have to make training so fun and rewarding that they will be excited to learn new things! Don't push too hard or they will lose interest. Also if you only say command once and then make them do it, they will learn they have to listen to you the first time everytime!
After your dog does what you want it to give treat immediately(should be in hand),say "YEAH!!GOOD DOG!!" Then take a breif braek every few minutes and play with favorite toy or just run around acting silly and let your dog chase you then go back to training! Give your dog treats just for looking at you (eye contact).
Say name and when dog looks give cheese! Good for bonding and teaches dog to look when you say name!
