I have to vent this makes me so angry!!!

Today as i was driving home ona country road i so often take to see if there are any strays i need that i can help i was driving and saw a box something told me to stop and pull over when i did i got out and looked in and tehre were three full blooded beagle puppies around 5 1/2 weeks i immediatly took them to the vet to get evaluated the vet was so greatful she did EVERYTHING FOR FREE. But a little way down before i took the pups to the vet from where i found there box i came across another box having that same urge to stop i did and found three more pups this time they werent so fortunate they were newborn and all three were dead someone took these babies strait from the mother and dumped them and let them die.When did pets become disposable! If people would only spay or neauter their pets we would see less of this stuff. I am so glad i came across these babies when i did or they wouldnt of made it they are so wormy i have gotton them wormed and they will be getting their shots soon.And for all of you that are trying to rehome your pets when you dont plan ahead for the life of your dog this is just one example of the things that can happen .We have to clean up other peoples messes if onkly they would of been responsable in the first place and gotton their pet fixed!!It just makes me furious that someone could do this How DARE THEY!

I Oct. 2002 someone dropped some dogs off in our neighborhood. I took in one as did other neighbors. The one I adopted was so thin. I cried when I looked at his sad little eyes. I took him to the vet for shots etc. We put him through the heart worm treatment. He had something on his leg that took months to clear up. He just got neutered and the gland in the rear removed because they kept getting infected. He looks like a different dog. He gets along with the boxers. I agree with we have to clean up after other people mistakes. We all have a calling. Maybe this is ours.

It is defanantly my calling and always will be till the day i die.These babies are sooooooooo gosh darn cute . I have them on quarenteene away from my other dogs in a room off the back of my house until i can be sure they dont have parvo or something but my god they are soooooooo smart they already tell you when they gotta go potty. The vet says they are no more than 5 1/2 weeks old .Rest assured i will be stopping and looking in every single box i see from now on!!!

I just don't understand how people can have so little respect for life that way. What that person did is inconceiveable to me. Good thing those puppies had the good fortune to be found by you. The other poor little ones that didn't make it, well, I guess they are now being nurtured at the Bridge by some of the doggies, including maybe some of the beloved ones of our BW folks, already up there.

It is horribly shocking what some people will do.
My youngest (now 15 months) was left outside on the coldest night in February (around 20-30 degrees in FL) in front of a vet's office at 3-4 days of age in a small box with his brother and sister. When the clinic opened, they took them in but couldn't care for them and called FBR. They were sick little pups for a long time. I am so thankful for the wonderful people that took care of him. He is my joy!

It's a good thing YOU found those sweet little puppies!:p

We have the APL in our city and the guys I work with find boxes of puppies pretty consistently...there are quite a few people in the department who have 'box puppies'. It is sad...I guess we can be thankful up here that the people take they're boxes to the APL or the pound instead of the side of the road.

I grew up in the country and I can't tell ya how many strays we fed or took in. It's pretty sad. A couple of them only hung around for a few days and took off again. :(

I can relate

My hobby used to be taking in strays. In my life, I've taking in 13 cats (not including kittens).
When I was about 10 or so, I desperately wanted pets. My parents wouldn’t let me have any because they said they were too expensive. So I did what any logical kid would do, I started taking in strays :D Without my parents knowing, I took in 2 cats which were always together and very thin and made them a home in the utility closet in our apartment building. I named them Princess and Sylvester. I fed them scraps of food, and cleaned their kitty litter (which was a box full of dirt) all winter but little did I know… I had my own kitty-mill going. Soon my 2 cats were 7 cats. So on my own, I came up with the brilliant idea of giving them to a pet store. Down to 2 cats again. Later that year the utility closet population had risen to 9. This time I told my parents and they helped find the kittens homes but I still couldn’t keep Princess and Sylvester because it would cost too much to fix at least one of them :(
The moral of the story is: While shelters and rescues are doing a great job with the animals they already have, they should offer to provide some assistance to people who may not be able to afford spaying and neutering. It is not always a matter of irresponsibility, for some people cost is the issue.

In some areas like mine, they offer a sliding scale on the fees. I really don't think it is publicized enough. I know because I receive the newsletters from the shelters and I go there. I think the average person might not know unless they really looked into it. And I am sure not every humane society has a program like this.
They also have a feral cat catch and spay/neuter program. It is manned mostly by volunteers. We have many stray cats, I can only imagine how many there would be without the program.

We have a mobile spay/neuter truck too. Again, I think the people who need it the most are the ones we are somehow not reaching with the limited advertising. It is a great start to what could be a wonderful program.
I believe very strongly in education and the marketing of the available support. I don't believe that most people want to do wrong by their pets, but as you said it is often cost and I believe lack of knowledge plays a big role too.

It would be wonderful if programs like this were available to people everywhere.

The shelters that I work with, 4 total, all give coupons for reduced cost or free spay/neuter (dependent on ability to pay) to anyone who asks. The coupons are for a single organization that is partly funded by donations and the United Way. Incidently, any animals that I get, be they shelter pulls or surrenders or strays are all desexed for free since we are a 501c3 rescue. As for the rescue, no animal is adopted until spay/neuter is complete unless there are mitigating circumstances (young puppy, unhealthy dog, etc), and then the spay/neuter is completed by 6 months or when the dog is fit. I think most rescues work the same way, though shelters are iffy.

I didn't know that. That's good news though A friend of mine got her Border Collie X from the city pound and she did not come spayed and as far as I know, they didn't offer anything. I've noticed that all rescues spay/neuter their animals before adopting them though.
I guess there should be more of an effort made to make these coupons more "common knowledge" to everybody. Most people just assume they can't afford it and don't research it, but that doesn't stop them from getting pets. :rolleyes:
I also strongly believe that people should need licences to own and breed pets.
