hi I have a 3 almost 4 month old boxer female and she has been wormed but it seems like she eats and eats and eats but one hour after shes done you can see her rib cage. I was just wondering if this is normal for a pup. she weighs almost 20 lbs. I have also noticed when we go to boxer playdates pups that are only 3 weeks older then her are a lot taller and seem to be heavier. any suggestions???? thank you

Seeing the rib cage on a boxer pup is normal.

I'm not an expert, but as long as the dog is behaving normally/isn't displaying anything to make you concerned other than the fact that you think she's small, I wouldn't worry about it. I was often concerned about Kevin's size at that age (I wanna say he weighed a similar amount, and he's a male), but there was nothing to be concerned about.

What do you feed?

My boxer puppy sky was around 20 pounds at 3 month. It is normal to see the rib cage. Do you feed her high quality food? If you are really worried you shoud check with your vet to make sure everything is alright.

Our Chase was a little under weight as a pup and still is. He stayed very very active which kind of made him fluctuate until he was about 1 1/2 yrs old. If you notice her behavior changing or she's resting alot more have her evaluated by his vet. Food with alot of fillers tends to keep them hungry

This is probably the most frequently asked question in the health forums ;) and the answer is that it's completely normal for boxer puppies to be skinny like that. As long as your puppy is showing no other signs of illness and has been given a clean bill of health by a vet, you should not be concerned about her weight.

In a mature adult boxer, you should be able to see the last few ribs when the dog is standing normally; in puppies however you will see A LOT more, especially when they're between 2 and 7 months old. Caney was skin and bones as a puppy -- people thought we starved her :o but she had a great appetite, a normal energy level for a puppy her age, and she was healthy. Finally around a year old she started filling out.

The important thing right now is to not overfeed in an effort to make him gain weight. Overfeeding a large breed puppy can actually cause serious problems with bone and joint development. Feed no more than the recommended amount that's printed on the bag of kibble.
