I have a climber

I have a space behind the kitchen door app 3’x6’. I had planned it for a coat closet but it made a great doggy bedroom. I had no trouble with my previous boxer or my mini schnauzer, but my baby Rayna (11wks) is a climber. I hate to crate her every time I leave the room. She doesn’t bother the gate as long as she can see me, but if I’m out of site she is over it in 3 seconds flat. I had thought of stacking another gate over the first. Anyone else had this problem and if so how did you correct it?

We definatly have this problem. I finally found a gate he either can't or just doesn't go over. It's Carlson brand and it's much taller than the other ones and the bars areup and down with none across so he doesn't climb it. I got it at petsmart it was a little more expensive but so far worth it.

it could be that the gate is just to short for your needs. before you go out and purchase a larger gate, let me ask you a question.

does your boxer actually climb over the gate, or do they jump over the gate?

No, she climbs it like a ladder. I saw her do it. She is only 11 wks old yesterday and the gate is 30" tall. I was trying to find a way to use what I have available. I had used this gate for several years with my previous boxer, no problems. I have to order everything or else drive 100 miles to get to some good stores. We only have W@#-2%&*. Country living is great but it does have a few draw backs.

you might want to try placing some double-sided tape on the gate, where she climbs it. the double-sided tape is a harmless way of deterring her from climbing on top of it. the double-sided tape will be a strange, but harmless, sensation to her paws which will hopefully keep her from continuing to climb the gate. you can find some thick double-sided tape at an arts & crafts store, or office supply store. the kind i am talking about is usually used for affixing address numbers to one's home so it is strong enough to last a while.

another alternative is available at most franchised pet stores. it is a mouse-trap like device that is harmless to dogs because it uses a large, plastic, spatula-like flap to gently startle the dog when it is set off. you set it like a mouse trap and it is very sensitive to movement. if you were to place on the top of the gate, or near the gate, it might help deter your dog from using it as a ladder.

perhaps those might help to get you started.

another option is to teach her the "off" command and reinforce that when you see her climb or want to climb the gate. since she is young, it is a great time to teach her what she can and cannot do in your home.

a big part of training the "off" command will be to catch her in the act. in order to do so, try attaching a bell to the gate, that way you will "hear her" as she starts to make her escape. :)

good luck.

Thanks for all the great ideas. We have been working on the "off and back" command. There is on thing in our favor, she doesn't realize that sound travels. I have been leaving the room for a minute at a time and standing just out of site and correct her when ever she puts a paw on the gate. I try to come and go as usual so that she sees that I'm not leaving her and will be right back. I like the double stick tape idea and will be looking for some when I go out this week.

We stacked our gates. Our five month old gus has never respected a gate. At first he climbed them now he just plows right through them(he is 48 lbs). However, when I stack the gates he will not bother them. He won't even test them. I think the height intimidates him. This was a great solution because I already had two gates.
