We had a terrible night last evening...around 2 a.m. Sasha began frantically pawing in her doggie bed beside ours - then she suddenly jumped across our bed and ran into the living room like a nut. Thinking she was being her usual naughty self, I ran after her only to find her face had swollen up like a prize fighter and she had tiny welts all over her.

Long story short, we are guessing she is either allergic to the sap in the Christmas tree she keeps attacking or a spider from the tree bit her and caused the terrible reaction.

We gave her two benadryl as the vet directed but after three hours her hives were even larger and her eyes were swollen shut. So in the wee hours, I rushed her to the doggie emergency clinic where she received new antihistamines and a round of steriods.

Right now she is still puffy in her face but all of her hives are pretty much gone. Now we just have to decide what to do with our Christmas tree or even if it WAS the christmas tree she was reacting to...we think we will move it to a corner and put a gate around it just in case it is the sap. We are also doing a major apt cleaning and bug search today but I am not sure what else to do...the vet didn't have many other suggestions either!!

So I guess in the Sasha vs. the Christmas tree fight - the tree won out!!!
Poor Sasha!!!!!!!!!

Awww poor baby! I've only seen Maxymillian like that once... when he developed an alergic reaction to his shots. He looked like a balloon and his eyes were swollen shut. Offcourse we rushed him to the vet for help...

Gating the tree is a good idea. If she won't be able to get to it, she shouldn't get that much of an reaction. Unless it wasn't the tree that caused it.

Last year I broke down and bought an artificial tree because our cat was always attacking the real tree. Although i wasn't too fond of an artifial tree I have to admit now that i really like it...no more sap mess, no watering, no drying pine needles all over the place and no reactions to the pups and kitties alike. Easy to put up (came with the lights on it already) and even easier to break down. I'm convinced!

I hope Sasha is feeling better really soon! Kisses to her swollen eyes!

Thanks everyone...Sasha is doing much better today. Her face and eyes were swollen right through the night, but luckily the vet gave us extra antihistamine pills to help her out. Now the poor dear has diarrhea so she may be in for yet another trip to the doctor's...

The tree is being relocated to the corner and we are gating it off so she can't eat anymore of the branches - haha. We did a complete clean out of our bedroom and her sleeping area and washed all of her blankets and pillows. She seemed to do well last night other than her bathroom problems!!

I really hope it was the christmas tree because I would hate for this to happen again and not know what caused it! Unfortunately, our vet said that's the trouble with indoor allergies...it can take a long time to figure out what's causing the reaction.

So thanks again...we will give sash lots of kisses and hugs and keep you posted on how she is doing! Maybe an artificial tree isn't such a bad idea...........................

I'm glad to hear Miss Sasha is feeling better. I hope she doesn't have to go to the vet again...

I got an artificial tree with the lights on it last year and I love it. It is so much easier to take care of. I buy the pine scented candles to help the effects.
