Okay, so this morning I went out and bought Emma some children's benadryl for the horrible scratching she's been doing lately. I thought I was supposed to give her 1 ml per 1 lb of body weight when really I was supposed to give her
1 mg per 1 lb of body weight. So, I ended up giving my 30 lb baby 2 tablespoons (30 mls) of children's benadryl this morning and now I am so nervous that it might hurt her...What do you all think? She seems fine so far. Also, so that I never do this again can someone more confident than me tell me how much Benadryl I should give her and how many times per day?

Thanks so much.

Sounds like you gave the liquid stuff--better to give the capsules next time. I think they take capsules easier. At least mine does. As far as the amount dogs 50 lbs and over can take 2 benadryl capsules every 12 hours. So I would say yours can take 1 capsule every 12 hours. On the overdose, I don't know much about that so I would call your vet straight away and see what they say. Let us know what they say. Paula

Don't worry!! I have given my son children's benadryl - I made this mistake on him once!!! ...a 30 lb dog is fine. Plus the children's is alcohol free, not as powerful as the adults'. For my bichon frise (who weighs 14 lbs) I am able to give 25 mg (every 4-6 hrs) for severe itching if needed. According to the bottle 2 tablespoons are 50 mg..your dog will probably be very sleepy, but you didn't do any damage for a one time dose...basically you gave her 2 doses at once, but that's okay, don't worry. Many parents have done the same thing to their children!! You might want to wait double the time before the next dose - 12 hrs?? See how she's doing...in order to do any real harm she'd have to drink the entire bottle!!

Buy the pills and give those.

Dosage for pills - 1 mg per 1 pound of body weight. The pills are 25 mg's each, so you can give 1 with no problem. Generally, it is every 12 hours, but you can give it every 8 hours. (3 times per day - max). The dosage of 1 mg per 1 pound is a very safe dose to give.

I'm 99% sure that benedryl liquid is 1mg/ml, so it's probably the same dose. If I'm wrong I'll tell ya tomorrow, I can check at my work. Even if it is more, benedryl has such a large range for dosing that the only side effect would be that she will probably just be extra sleepy.

Can't remember the dosage right now but I use children's chewable benedryl. Grape flavoured ooooo!

benadryl liquid

Hey!
Princess is 11 months old and about 40lbs. I had to give her benadryl last night and the vet had told me that i should give her 2 tsp 2 times a day. Well I gave her the 2 tsp when i got home from work and she was real groggy and she brought up everything in her little stomach...I felt soo bad for her but i honestly think that it should only be half a tsp. Cause for an adut it's 2 tsp, and that can make an adult sick. I'm trying the 1/2 tsp today when i get home....Hopefully she won't be sick from it this time. She need's it real bad before she makes herself bleed from scratching......:(
Hope this helps!!!!

Thanks everyone for getting back to me. I called my vet and he told me not to worry about it. Emma wasn't even sleepy, she continued to run around like crazy all day (and the scratching even let up a bit). We're going on Monday to the vet to figure out why she is scratching.

Thanks again.
Amanda

(PS the liquid children's benadryl has 25mg per 5mls or 5mg per 1ml. So at 30 lbs she really needed 1 1/5 teaspoons which is 6mls. I am not going to mess that up again:))
