I took Mabel to the groomer today (and I'll be posting in the behavior forum later about that...Miss Mabel has been kind of bratty and testing her limits the past few weeks but today she was really fresh...I know it's a normal adolesence thing (she's 10 months) but ugh) and when I got her out of the car a woman passing by stopped, looked at her, and said, "Is that a pit bull?"

Okay, I don't have a problem with pit bulls, I think they're great dogs, really, I do, but what makes people think a Boxer is a pit bull? They look NOTHING alike. And I have to admit it tweaks me a bit to have Boxers lumped in with "the mean/aggressive/fighting" group of canines.

I told the lady "No, she's a BOXER!" (left out the 'you moron' part...) and she says, "Same difference."

ARGH! I was (and still am) annoyed.

"The Question"

thats a perfect description..i have been asked the "Question" several times and it ticks me off as well.... my girl is a revrese brindle and is very dark with an all black face, but looks nothing like a pitt bull....some (non dog) people are just very ignorant...

We get that questions all the time

At first I thought that people asked that because Crash is white. Most people are use to seeing fawn or even brindle boxers. The pit bull questions don't tick me off anymore. The one that bugs me now is "will he change color?". Can people really be that ignorant. ARGH! smashicon

That one I've never heard before, scary.

Mygirlrosie--I feel your frustration! That would make me crazy, too. Nothing like lumping Boxers into the same classification (not that pit bulls are all evil) "just because."

Crashsmom--I think you should tell them he already does change colors--when he's wet, he turns blue, or something like that!

Yeah! Maybe we could get the foam bats made with a picture of a boxer on it and it can say, "No I am not a pitbull, I'm a boxer".:)

I'm gonna have to one up you guys. Not only do people think Beau is a pitbull because he's white, I actually had a couple at the dog park ask me if he is an albino. I almost laughed out loud at them. What idiots!!! Beau has BROWN eyes, a BRINDLE eye patch and BRINDLE spots under his coat. Albinos are SOLID white and have RED eyes. Honestly, some people should not be allowed to speak. I just responded with a dull no and walked away to avoid any other idiotic questions.

I think the confusion has something to do with general body shape, not their faces. Both breeds are very muscular have have a similar stance. And, since Pitts are so misunderstood, many people won't get close enough to what they think is a pitt to really look at one. Another similarity is the broad, heart-shaped head. So, from a distance (or if viewed by the ignorant) the breeds do look similar (of course, one would have to be about 7 miles away for a boxer lover to not spot a boxer!). But, if people would stop for a friggin minute and think about what they are saying...Not to offend, but calling all pitts dangerous, or even thinking that Boxers and "Bad" pitts haver similar temperments is just as stupid as if I were to say that I don't like BLONDES because a BALD man snapped at me in the grocery store. Do they not realize that dogs have personalities? Arrrrgghhh....

This type of thing really ticks me off. And not because my baby is judged by people who think he is a total different breed. It ticks me off because Pitts are so misunderstood. Like I've said in many other posts, if they are raised right, with the "No Violence, No Pain" approach, they are very loving and loyal dogs. But I won't go into that rant again....

Okay, stepping down. I guess my point was that full sized pitts and boxers do look similar if you take away thier VERY DISTINCT FACES.

(For those of you who don't know, I have had Pitts in the past, and one of my current babies is a pitt mix. She doesn't have the strong pitt look, well - maybe a little in the face, but she is all stuborn, lovable pitt attitude. My Pitt mix is the tan baby next to my name. :) )
