I've seen the dips work first hand for mange. There is a little lab puppy who comes into the vet office that I work for. Her face was completely bald as well as spots on her body. She came in for a dip once a week and within about 2 months she has regrown all of her hair and is completely healed. She came in for a bath the other day and I could hardly recognize her. The dip doesn't burn or anything like that. I know this because I did the dips and have gotten it all over myself (puppy's aren't very cooperative!). They get a bath and then have the dip sponged onto their body. After that they just air dry.

They may not burn the skin but have you ever seen a pup the day after a dip?? They are sluggish and downright yucky!!! Ivermectin gives them the runs and never once did my vet mention boosting the immune system. We seem to be having the best luck with seameal and a good diet being as we have tried all other options!

This puppy was not given ivermectin, and being at the vets office can be very tiring and for some dogs stressful. As I said I have gotten it on myself and even though I'm supposed to I never rinse my hands or arms afterwards, so I've essentially dipped myself too. I have also heard that animals can feel the topical flea medicine spreading across their bodies. I've also gotten a lot of this on myself with out washing it off and I've never felt anything. I also don't have fleas!

that is so funny!!! Well at any rate we got Tyson from the SPCA he was still a puppy and had spent quite some time on the streets as a few of the authorities had commented on trying to catch him. He was terribly underweight, and the first thing he did when he ate at the SPCA was vomit!! When we saw him the first time he looked terrible!!! I just wish that the vet or someone would have thought that maybe we needed to focus on his general health before we started making him sicker with medicine for his skin you know?? I know that before we administer chemotherapy of any kind we do our best to bring that person up to tip top shape. And we focus on immune system!!

I have been tempted to just go for the baths...but I don't want him to have to worry about side effects. The Goodwinol cream seems to be working just slow. His old spots are getting fur but there are smaller new ones. THey seem to get under control quicker it just feels like it's going to be never ending...and now with us going out of town I am so afraid we will lose ground...

Actually we just got back from Florida... and I was worried about leaving him with friends and them doing the cream and the stress. He looks GREAT...I can't find any spots... a little thinness here and there but that's IT!!! I know they didn't put cream everywhere I was and she said last night she put it in one place..(i had it ALL over) I'm thinking the cream may have been the prob. Also took him off that Kirkland, he shed WAY too much and his coat is BEAUTIFUL with Chicken soup... now on to neutering...

I hope your doggies are doing better with their Demodex. A couple comments:
Ivermectin is an anti-parasite med given to livestock. It is also marketed in a smaller dose than would be given for mange as a heartworm preventative. Some dogs have trouble with it (ex: diarrhea), but others do just fine. Tae was on it for 2 mos this summer and had no issues whatsoever and recovered from mange beautifully.
The dips can be toxic to both dogs and humans. I did a lot of research on them this summer, both on BW and other websites. I was concerned my vet would want to dip Tae if her mange did not get better on its own. A dog that's dipped should not sleep in the bed with its owners and I believe should stay away from pregnant women. When dipping a dog, the dipper should wear protective clothing. While the dipper might not see any ill effects at that time, there could be long-term effects from repeated exposure. What's more, one of the side effects of the dips is the dog is woozy the day or several days afterwards. The wooziness is not due to being at the vet/stress, it is caused by the dip.
Goodwinol doesn't really help too much. My vet opted not to sell it to me b/c he felt it wouldn't really help. I did some research on this, too, and prevailing opinion is it doesn't do much for the dog.
My vet did not mention boosting the immune system. I learned the value of that on BW through reading old posts and corresponding via PM with Julie, one of the moderators. My vet did tell me, though, that most dogs are able to fight mange off without medication and it's best to wait until there are 7 "spots" before giving any treatment--at least this is his preference. When Tae continued to get hairless places, we started her on ivermectin.
Tae's hair came back in all spots but one. She has one spot where it is still evident to me that there was hair loss. No one else would notice, unless I point it out.

He was a wreck! I learned about boosting the immune system after Tyson was prescribed ivermectin by the vet when he developed terrible diarrheah! He is now on wellness food with seameal and seems to be doing well in the BM department, his fur is getting softer daily but seems to be comming back super slow in some spots while others are gone! Any info would be much appreciated as I am like I said in the very beginning a boxer novice, and I did not anticipate the work that Tyson would be!
