i don't really know what just happened or what to do. my boyfriend and i were going out and we had our dog in the truck. i went into the house for something and the passenger door was left open. a lady came walking by the house with here dog, and out of nowhere my dog jumps out of the truck like a bullet, runs across the street and attacks the ladys dog. ( here dog is on a leash ). the ladys dog got off its leash and took off running and we pulled our dog back in the house. it only lasted about 30 sec to a min before we got it seperated but the lady took off after her dog, so we don't know if her dog got hurt. what should i do? he has never acted like this before. do you think animal control is going to come take him away. i'm really freaked out.

I doubt that animal control will come and take your dog away. It probably partly depends on whether the dog got hurt and whether the lady reports it. It's possible that you could be charged with allowing your dog to be off leash. It all depends on what the laws are in California.

Sorry

The lady, being a dog owner herself, will hopefully understand the situation and let it go. I'm sure if her dog was really hurt, she would have already paid you a visit. Good luck, I'm sure everything will be ok...remember, no news is good news.

Have you ever seen the lady before? If you have any idea where she lives, you may want to pay her a visit and see how her dog is.

Put yourself in her shoes. If you had been walking down the street minding your own business and out of nowhere (or a parked car in a driveway) some big dog came flying at you - how would you feel? And if said dog laid teeth on your properly controlled dog, would you "just let it go"? You are a dog person. If this happened to you, what would you do?

i wouldn't necessarily worry too much about animal control going to your home and removing your dog. however, i would suggest that if you ever see this lady again, or know where she lives, that you make sure to approach her, apologize, and let her know it was an accident. if possible, allow both your dogs to interact with one another, unless you feel your dog might start up with her dog again.
this is simply a common courtesy that should be extended from one fellow dog owner to another. at the very least, it might help soften her thoughts about your dog in her mind and hopefully she'll understand that things can happen at times. if the shoe was on the other foot, i'm sure that her efforts would be appreciated. :)

thank you all for the advise. we don't know where the lady lives, and we did try to find her to make sure her dog was okay. if the shoe was on the other foot, i would probably call animal control, and i think that it is completely understandable if she does. i just don't know what to do with kobe, he has never acted like this. we live in northern california, so if anyone knows of a good behaviorist please let me know. we live in an area where people walk by with there dogs throughout the day and we can't have him acting like this.

yes he has gone through obediance, and he is for the most part well behaved. he does bark at people when they walk by with a dog, but i thought he was just protecting the house. we are actually contacting another trainer today that is recomended by a rescue, (we visit the website to see what dogs are available), so he will be going back to training as soon as we can get it set up.
