That's what I'm afraid of. Once Beau starts, he doesn't stop until whatever is in his crate is completely demolished and stinky. Maybe I'll just start hitting garage sales and buying old sheets so that it won't be so expensive to replace.

Are the Orvis bed covers waterproof or washable? If not, they're out of the question since he's going to pee on them.

I like the carpet idea, it seems pretty sturdy. If he leaves the carpet alone in the house (does he?) he might leave this alone. Just superglue it to the bottom of the crate so he cant pick it up

Oh and, does he eat the shreds? You could just give him back the shreds after washing the pee off them. Bit hard the shred things that cant be shredded more!

The orvis covers aren't waterproof but they make a waterproof liners for underneath...I think they cost around 30 bucks. We currently have 3 beds with the toughchew covers....one in the family room, and one in each of their crates. Sadie has gotten through her bed in her crate and the bed in the family room including the waterproof liner. They will replace the toughchew cover but not the waterproof liner or the bedding if it gets torn. I haven't returned the two she's chewed, all the sales people recognize us now :(

I really like the idea of the carpet remnants....that's something I never thought of and might work.

Since he is destructive within a matter of minutes, I think it's more likely that he has separation anxiety rather than he's bored. He's my shadow. If I take the trash out, he scratches at the door until I come back...10 seconds later. He doesn't get up during the night and try to destroy anything either. It's only when I'm not around. When we're at my parents' house and I leave to meet a friend, etc. he tries to follow me and when my parents won't let him, he usually mopes around until I get back. He shouldn't get bored in such a short period of time when he has his very own dachshund, plenty of toys and a queen sized bed to hang out in. I'd agree that he's probably bored if he destroyed things after a few hours, but we're talking about 5 minutes! If he can't see me, he's not happy. My mom says he's this way because I baby him so much, but I can't resist those eyes. It tears me up to see how sad he is when I put him in his crate every morning.

As far as the carpet, I'm afraid he'll pee on it and I'd have to throw that away, too. Since it's so inexpensive, I'll probably give it a try anyway. I need to invent a waterproof, chewproof, shredproof miracle bed!

Ok this is pretty gross, but will he pee on something twice? Like if you put a piece of carpet down and he pees on it, then you just aired it out till it dried, then put it in with him again so it still has his scent on it, would he pee again? Maybe if it already smelled like he peed on it he wouldnt do it twice?

Sounds like a serious case of separation anxiety. Your problem needs a behaviorist more than a better bed.

It's a nation wide list for trainers/behavior specialists. They may be able to work you both to a point where you don't need a crate. It's a long hard road but sooo worth it.

What about another boxer puppy? I know that is another huge responsibility--both financially and mentally but I must say, when we got Ali--the difference was night and day. Ruckus was never a total disaster but he has chewed up a couch before--among other things. We have always spent a lot of time with our babies but there are times when it's nice to not have to rush home from dinner or to be able to spend a Sunday afternoon at the beach. They had each other and it truly was WONDERFUL. One major issue we had was Ruckus sitting by the door drooling massive pools. He hated when we were gone before Ali. When Ruckus died recently, although incredibly painful-- we almost immediately found another puppy. My husband's mother asked us before we bought the new puppy, "Are you sure you want two dogs again?" and the immediate response from both of us....was ABSOLUTELY. No doubt about it. And perhaps a house trained rescue would be an easier transition. Just a thought!
