Vets

If your vet won't get down on the floor to get some kisses, find a new one. We have great ones who are open 7 days a week and 8 to 9 most days. They call to see how Molly is even when she hasn't had to see them for a while. They changed her name on all her records to be Molly Wiggle Butt. We love them all.

Kind of off-topic, but one thing you might want to try with Austin at the vet is classical conditioning - basically, click/treat continually while he's in a 'scary' situation so that he starts to associate that sitaution with Good Things for Austin. It will take time, and you'd need to do it more often than just his regular check-ups. You might have to start in the parking lot, if he gets nervous there first - click/treat as soon as he can see the building (or, if it's not until he's in the building that he starts to get anxious, as soon as he gets in the door), and keep c/t'ing until for a split second he looks for the treat after you click. Jackpot!! (Lots of treats) Praise and go home. Come back later or the next day - he'll start looking for the treat sooner and sooner, until he's paying attention to you instead of worrying about being at the vet. Then start getting him further into the clinic, into the exam room, introducing the vet tech, the vet, etc. All of this one at a time, very slowly, don't add new things until he's comfortable with the level he's at. When you start introducing the people, start with them just in sight and gradually closer. As they get in range, they can start tossing him treats after you click.

Of course, since he did so much better with you gone, maybe it's not his nervousness at all, but him picking up on yours. Next time you should take the valium!

Thanks Julie! I think next time I WILL take the valium! Vet thought maybe he was in "guard mode" so that's why he was acting that way.

muzzle

At the end of Katie's life (she's having a good time at the Bridge) she became a bit senile - had reactions that she wouldn't have had at a younger age. During one exam, the vet stuck his hand in her mouth to check her teeth and Katie bit him - we didn't know it, but she had a cracked tooth. But I was mortified that she had bitten her vet of 12+ years. I got one of those soft fabric muzzles and I made sure it was adjusted properly before I needed to use it - then when we had to go to the vet, after she was in the car and happy to be going somewhere, I quickly slipped on the muzzle. She didn't care and happily went on the ride. So when we got to the vet's office, and she was apprehensive, the muzzle was already dealt with, it wasn't an issue. And the vet always removed it after the check-up - he could be the good guy.

I am thinking of changing my vets. Everytime I go to the vets with Bella (4mths old) I have an appointment made. I usually go during the day as I thought it would be quieter and I would be in and out ... wrong. Everytime I have been to the vets it has been empty, but they make me wait half an hour after my appointment time! Not only is this not fair to Bella who gets borred and thisty, but I have better things to do that wait around in a empty vets! I could have taken Bella for a half hour walk for a start! Just needed to vent my anger also.

I worked out a thing with my new vet because Oliver was worried about being there. I carried treats in my pockets and would give them to him just like Julie said. Then I noticed that the vet tech and the vet both had treats in thier pockets. Oliver relaxed so much when the vet and the tech gave him a treat. When he sat he got one, when he got on the scale, another treat. Now when we go to the vet and he sees Dr. Ron he wiggle butt kidney bean dances. I was really sad though because our favorite tech is no longer there and I am not sure about the new girl.
Oh well, hope Austin and his new vet and you can build a wonderful relationship!

I think the treat idea is a great thing, but when Aus is nervous he won't take a treat.
I'm very happy with this vet, my Mom has gone there for 40+ years and now the son is the head vet. They even sent me a thank you letter for bringing Austin in!
Next time I'm going to try the Rescue Remedy.
