Austin's Mom

Well I made an appt. for Austin to get his checkup and shots at a new vet today. It's not really new-my Mom took all of her dogs to that vet. I went to one that was closer to my house. WRONG! I really didn't like them the first time we went there. But I figured it's only once a year so no big deal. WRONG AGAIN! I called one time and asked to speak to a vet they said OH NO_YOU CAN'T DO THAT. What kind of crap is that?
So right then I made the dicision to NEVER go back there. I love my dog too much to take him to just anyone. What if he got sick? There's no way I would want them to treat him-never mind leave him there.
So when I made his appt. this morning they were sooooo nice on the phone. I asked her to put no ACE on his chart and they were fine with that. They are even going to give me a light sedative to give him before he goes so he doesn't freak out like he usually does.
Sorry this is so long. Just needed to vent a little.

Way to go putting your foot down and selecting a different vet. What was the reason the other place said that you could not speak to the doctor? That is ridiculous and does not make any sense. Good luck with this vet and let us know how things go :D

Thanks. I do feel good about my decision. Only the best for my baby.
The other vet wouldn't give me a reason I couldn't talk to a Dr., they said I'd have to bring Aus in. I guess they were more concerned about collecting the money than the emotional upset it would have caused Aus to have to go in.
His appt. is for next Monday night-I will let you know how he makes out. They already called me back to let me know I could pick up his sedatives tomorrow.

We live in a small, rural town. If we don't like the vet here the next closest is 40 miles away. Before we moved here we lived in another small area that consisted of 2 towns about 8 miles apart. I didn't like the vet in the one town because she kept misdiagnosing my boys pancreatitis. I took his blood test to the vet in the other town and she diagnosed it immediately and we got him on the proper diet and such. I have heard scary things about the vet here but have been lucky that I haven't needed them for anything other than vacs. Knock on wood. :p

Well I picked up Austin's sedative today-valium 2 mg. I have to give him 4 pills 2 hours before his appt. That's 8 mgs. I hope it's not too much for him-don't want to have to carry his big a$$ into the office! :p

Austin's Mom -

I also changed Barron's vet because I was not happy with their recent treatment of Barron, and no longer trusted them. Both Barron & I love his new vet. She and her husband are wonderful with Barron and Barron - for the first time in a long time while at a vet's office- did the jelly bean dance and ran back and forth from me to the vet giving lots of kisses! What a wonderful feeling:D

Hi there Chris, I am sure austin is in good hands now! Sounds like a good vet you have now. Let us know how it all turns out. I wouldn't want to have to carry Ozzy either:LOL: It must make you feel so much better too, knowing your baby is in good hands.

I do feel much better. I know that Aus will be in good hands now. This is a vet my Mom has trusted with all of her dogs for the past 40 or so years. It's a family business-the Dad took care of Mom's dogs, now he's retired and his son is in charge. And his son is a vet tech there and his daughter a receptionist. He goes Monday night so I will let you all know how he makes out.

Well Austin went for his check up tonite. He is a healthy 93 pounds. (oops!)
The valium didn't really do him any good. He was shaking like crazy when we walked in the door. He snapped at one of the vet techs, and fought me when I tried to muzzle him.
The vet offered 3 solutions: 1 being I leave the room because he might be in the "guard dog" mode and feeling like he has to protect me from something. 2 giving him a shot to calm him down. 3 rescheduling the appt. so hub could be there - he was stuck in traffic and couldn't make it. I just wanted it over so I said let's try my leaving the room. Absoulutely broke my heart when I saw his face as I was leaving. I told him I'd be back for him. It wasn't 3 minutes later they came out and told me he was done and was such a good boy without me.Except they couldn't get him off of the scale-it was like he was frozen or something. As soon as he saw me he got off the thing. Right now he's sleeping and I am a mess. I hope he's not mad at me.
Turns out one of the receptionists used to work for the vet I used to go to. She totally understood my disgust with them.
Sorry for ranting so long-I just hate for my Aus to be upset. Thanks for listening.
